Location: USA | Today I am getting ready to repair this server as all of the parts ( I think ) needed to repair this sucker have arrived. I decided before stripping the old parts out, that there might be a few folks that will enjoy seeing a server that was literally on fire. The amount of light and smoke that pored out of this box was simply amazing to watch for the few seconds. This is a backup server for a horse track betting business. The customer complaint was the server was pouring smoke out and was not working. We decided the likely problem was one of the redundant power supply blew up, which has happened to me with these Dell rack mount servers and these tiny 1100W PSU's.
After replacing the power supply, I was in for more smoke an light show. In hind sight, I should have taken the cover off of the server and had a look inside before putting the new power supplies in. Either way it wouldn't have mattered because the server had already been on fire, and frankly given the necessity of this server to be up and running, I would not have trusted the old PSU's anyway and would have replaced them just for good measure. So without further delay, here are the photos. The small card with heatsink and bulged battery is a mini Perc RAID controller. The plastic next to the scorched motherboard are indeed melted a bit, as well as one mount for the card. Part of the connector on the card had turned into a molten plastic blob, including some components had fallen off.
