Lightning strike yesterday AM came down the phone line and took out the lan ports on my router, along with two of my 8 port switches.

Great!

I'm prone to running around pulling cords out of the wall when storms happen, at least now I can tell people my paranoia isn't misguided, but it sucks that your gear got hit.

The new 286 is working, though isn't complete as I need to take it outside and hose it all down, get rid of that battery acid and clean the case up. I also managed to get the Thunder Board to work, but only had enough caps to make it output sound, the ones on the output side are still the trash they used to 'professionally refurbish' the card. Also their dumb ill-fitting volume pot acts as a mic, maybe due to not being grounded. Still, it does work now where before the system couldn't see it, so this should be a trivial repair once I have the money to burn.
Discovered my IDE cables were dodgy, both of the ones I tried, and that's why the drive wasn't playing ball. Also got XT-IDE to appear (though it still did nothing but appear and exit) by filling the first half of the ROM with zeroes, offsetting it by 800h from where it was, then setting the ROM address back 800h - meaning it was at the same address it was before. Couldn't tell you why this works, but it didn't detect anything and I don't need it anyway, so whatever. You know, it might help if someone wrote real documentation for the damn XT-IDE bios, instead of whatever that trash is they're claiming is documentation.

Quick benchmarks and such suggest that the system does perform properly, games and applications also work so far, the only thing that's thrown a fit is ID games having display problems, but problems with ID shite is a given so I'm not going to chase it down. Will need to get network functionality going at some point, but that shouldn't be too bad.

Otherwise, I issued some fixes to a Duke3D level I released quite a while ago now; https://forums.duke4.net/topic/10697-release-dimension-shift/page__v...

Aye, well BT are sending me a new router thing. So at least that's one less expense. I do have those anti-surge sockets on the power side. Along with a UPS for my NAS. The router got its power from that too but it came down the phone line and jumped to the LAN circuit from the shitty BT router as its shortest path to ground. Ho hum, at least no computers got fried.

Good news with your 286 then, I'm using automotive brake parts cleaner nowadays, when I don't just chuck stuff in the dishwasher!

Last day before I can finally move in. As a big thanks to all, I will be making "Bøf Sandwich" for dinner for all. Roughly translated, then it will be "Beef Sandwich-Burger" in English. It is an old Danish version of the burger, in were it is a combination of minced beef paddy meal (soft onions, gravy and potatoes kind of thing).

It is basically a standard burger without the salad. (just the bun and the beef paddy/burger-beef) Then it have pickeled red beet's, crispy roasted onions, raw onions, pickeled cucumber slices, Danish remoulade-dressing, tomato ketchup and a butt-load og brown gravy all over it. The gravy have to cover everything, else it is porly serving. :-D

It will be awesome to thank them all with a good solid meal tonight.

Purely because I felt like it, I decided to take a shit Chinese tricycle and attach a diesel engine to it.

3HP 212cc diesel, a cheap China clone of a 1970s Yanmar.

The drive system is a simple centrifugal clutch, jackshaft and a sprocket with a rag joint on the wheel. Torque converters are costly, especially if you can find the needed weights and springs to make them engage at the lower RPMs of a diesel. Centrifugal clutches give a rougher ride, as well as less fine control over speed, but they're cheap and simple, so the likely failure of this part is less of a concern.

This was its first run, it was built for torque and not speed, but should top out at around 25MPH. I can't really open it up much yet, though, as the handlebars suck and are jabbing me in the ribs long before turning starts to happen, so they need to be replaced, I was also running a slicker front tire in this test. I have ridden it since with a fatter tire and it improved steering, but I still need to change to riser bars or something. Now I know it works, I don't mind putting the time in to do this, plus I need to make up some mudguards and paint things.

That's so cool, you'll need a trailer for all your stuff!
