Hehe.... Gary stands for Gate Array and provides some glue logic between stuff. At least that is what information tells me. Hmmm... Glue logic between bus and floppy plus other stuff.

Had some nice stuff dropped into work for me today for free, one of our customers was having a clear out and knew I liked old computers, so dropped this little lot off for me. Only had time to test the monitors quickly on my 386 that is currently set up, both are working lovely, nice strong stable picture and good colours, glad to have some more working CRT's as it took me a lot of hunting to find just one locally over the last few years. So we have the 2 monitors, first is a hansol 15" from 1998 the other is the Gateway 2000 from 1995, the desktop is a Gateway 2000 pentium 90, has S3 video, sound blaster 16, mitsumi quad speed CD and a SCSI card, all looks complete and unmolested inside, still has it's hard disk too, we let you know when I have some time to test it, thankfully it has coin cell battery too so no worries with Dallas chip. The second tower machine is from 1998 and obviously paired with the hansol monitor, it's a bit of an odd beast, it's an AT board with a slot 1 Celeron, chipset is labeled PC 100 BX-Pro, it looks like a PChips board to me, has on board SiS 6326, audio etc. again it's all complete inc the HD. Also got a KVM with all the cables, keyboards and mice for both and a boxed adaptec SCSI card with driver disks and manual. Not at all bad for free and delivered to the workshop

@Brostenen; I have nobody to play with... luckily I'm quite adept at playing with myself.

@CyrixInstead; Much as I don't really like OEM gear, Gateway are among the more tolerable, given they often used fairly standard parts that you could actually do something with. As for that other machine, that motherboard looks suspiciously PC Chips to me.

@Old Guy 88; Seems to be a lot of love for Descent as of late.

Meanwhile, I have finally gotten something I've been trying to get for years but have failed to do so, either because someone else snatched it, forum admins were dicks or the seller didn't want me to buy it. Well none of that this time, so here;

The blue buttoned version of this case is what the family's first PC was in, a Socket 4 machine in the early 1990s. This case is slightly different, in a few tiny details. Whilst I do have one at last, it's a bit of a write-off, the cover has been replaced quite badly, the standoffs are unusual and were all broken, the plate for the switch is missing and the chassis is bent with its insides painted gloss gray by a blind man. No idea if I can get it into a usable state to be honest. It was going to house my P66 but I've decided to leave that where it is as there's no advantage to putting it in here, probably gonna put the K5 in here if I can find or make standoffs for it as it would benefit from the slightly better cooling this chassis offers.

Otherwise, I had a fire;

Garbage collection here is every few weeks, which isn't often enough and they'll only take the one bin, so over the course of a year a lot of rubbish had built up, filling pretty much my whole back yard. Unable to transport it and having lost my 'license' to utilize city waste facilities, I dug a hole and burned it. Unfortunately this wasn't as easy as it should have been, because it turns out there is only six inches of topsoil here before you hit smooth concrete, something which upon asking about it, covers pretty much the whole neighborhood for some reason, maybe left over from the slums that briefly stood here a century ago. Needless to say I smashed through this, but it was a pain in the ass.

Fire started with a nice 'wooph' though. As I look around, it seems everyone else on the street is doing the same thing, would explain why the air pretty much constantly smells like garbage fires here.

@DXZeFF Many years ago we were allowed to have 55 gallon drums in our back yards to burn trash. Not allowed anymore. Nice Fire though. Good luck with the new case.

Had some time last night to test both the gifted systems, both booted up fine with a new CMOS battery fitted and BIOS settings done! The Gateway 2000 P90 has 16 MB RAM, 1 GB HD, genuine SB16, STB S3 TRIO 64 V+. it has an install of Win98 with a drive compression utility active, it works but is glacial and to my mind not suited to the system at all so that will be getting formatted and a fresh DOS/Win 3.11 installed, should think it'll fly then

The tower with the freaky AT slot one board is also working well, it has a celeron 333MHz & 96 MB RAM, 3 GB HD, the board is a PCChips model M747(amazed this thing works!), Also running Win 98, but in this case it's quite happy, with all drivers installed and actually feels pretty snappy, video is an on board SIS 6326(what else? lol) which to be honest is good enough for this kind of machine anyhow, I very much doubt I'll be trying to game on it. So I'm well happy, that is two fairly interesting machines form the 90's with CRT's in unmolested working order, can't hope for much more than that!

Warm feelings, seeing the Blockbuster rentals. Kept one of those beige cases, and my Xbox collection.

If anyone is in the market for a small computer and have some spare parts laying around this is a really good deal. I had one of these and they work very well. Great box for an HTPC, firewall / server or console emulation.

I was originally looking for an 68000 card and not an 68030. I found one, that went out of stock, the same day I managed to save up the money. Why am I always one or two days late? The same fucking shit, happened to me, when I had managed to save up enough money for an IndevisionECS scandoubler. I am really getting tired of this game of saving up, while reading in dept about the hardware, only to find it sold out and no news on production re-run. I fucking hate this game, as there will go exactly a half to one month, and then the same hardware will show up on eBay at double to tripple the original price.

Anyway...
Bought that 030, and then I will have to settle with the fact that not all games will boot from floppy. So now I have to teach my self about whd-loader. The good part, is that it will boost my 500 to more than double speed of an stock Amiga3000. According to the seller, it will be 2.5 times faster than an stock 3000. Sounds good enough, as I have ECS chipset in my Amiga500 anyway. Now I really need to refurbishe that old 500 revision 5 model-3. It has kick 1.2 and I have a spare 512k ranger mem upgrade for it in a box somewere....

@Brostenen Funny you should mention Amiga, I set up my 500 yesterday to play Jaguar XJ 220(best 16 bit racer ever made in my opinion, and still the racer I enjoy the most full stop)! It's the same one I bought back in 1987, blew my first 2 weeks wages on the thing, a few of the keys no longer work and it's pretty badly yellowed but the old girl still works after 31 years, I still have my 1986 vintage Atari 520STFM as well in working order.

It is fun to play Amiga games with my children. Yet I make shure, that they will not play too much computer. Children really need to have a lot of other things in life. All through the summer, I did not let them play any computer or console. I told them that they had to wait untill fall and winther. Something they were not pleased to be told. Now is the time that indoor activity will be more frequent.

Ohhh... Sounds like you need to refurbishe that old lady. My working 500 (the one that is getting the 030 card), are going to be pimped. It is one of those late model 500, that are basically an Amiga500-Plus, that Commodore downgraded to a regulair model 500. It has 500+ written on the board on the silk screen.
What Commodore did, was to take a 500-Plus board, remove the clock circuitry (no leaking battery), remove 512k of ram and sell it with kick 1.3. Other small modefications was made, and so it still ned a bit of modding in order for more chipmem. They did however sell it with a full ECS chipset, like that of the Plus model.

Anyway...
I have modded it with a 2mb upgrade. The process is straight forward. Removing the solder blob on JP2 and solder a jumperwire to pad2 on JP2. The connect it to the trapdoor mem. Then sandwich an Gary adaptor between the board and the Gary chip, and connect the adaptor to the mem module in the trapdoor. This little mod, gave me full 1mb Chip mem and 1.5mb slow mem. The Terrible Fire 030 will give me additional 2mb fast ram, and both a 030 CPU and a FPU. I have an scandoubler in my 500 as well. So I can connect a TFT monitor, and avoid the flickering and save space. The flickering gives me headache and tricker a massive migrane on my girlfriend. Shure I still have an old TV, so I can experience gaming like it was 1989. And I still need to find scandoubler for my Amiga600 and my C64 need a HDMI or VGA solution as well.

Regarding yellow'ed cases. Then your post, reminds me of my second Amiga500, that are in the process of being restored. It is a long term project, in wich I have to use a PC-Floppy drive adaptor cable to be able to use a standard Floppy drive in the Amiga. I am waiting for a internal RF shield and a keyboard as well. Then I have to solder in two new joystick ports and I need to find a new trapdoor cover. The board is an Revision 5 model 3, so the machine is from between december 1987 and may 1988. The case have been "welded" back together by me, by using acetone and a brush. Then I made some cement from old ABS plastic and acetone, and glued some stiffening rods on the back of the case, were it was broken into pieces.

Finally... I need to modefy an ATX power supply, into an Amiga power supply. I have this old and dead original A500 psu. And I can reuse the power cable, in order not to hunt down a new square power plug. I know they can be bought new, yet they are black and not beige.

I have added a number of pictures, on the restore process so far. You can see how the "welding" turned out in some of them....

I approve of the pet rats. A few years ago I was dating a woman that had some. For while I had a couple rabbits which were really another girlfriends and ended up getting stuck with the white one. I let him run around the house because he was good about knowing where his cage was so it was never a big deal to get him back in there. Chewed some of my speakers, loved that foam.

Recieved my TF-530 in the mail today. I must say that this is quality soldering. That red PCB looks so sweet.
Still waiting for the new A500-Floppy drive and I need to get a new solder iron, as the old is nearly worn out.
And I need to modify a PC power supply in order to give this baby enough juice.

My Amiga's are getting really spoiled these days....

And I have hacked together an ATX-To-Amiga PSU cable as well. Going to need more juice in the future, and the original 500 PSU was dead. Used it as a donor for this cable. And I can use modern ATX power supply's as well. Took a couple of hours.

More soldering work. The Amiga500, that I am in the process of bringing back to life, was missing one joystick port, and the other was in bad shape. It was rusty and green and had a white layer here and there. I removed the one remaining one, and cleaned all solder pads up with IPA. Found some spare ones, that has never been used, and soldered them in. I need to go over my work on a few of the pads, and will wait until tomorrow, when there are more daylight. I will attend the sound ports as well. I have two spare ones, that I can use. The ones on it right now, are just too damaged. However... I ran systest, and both ports are working flawless, so I might not have to attend the soldering.

Not normal. Most machines are still working beautifully. Though this old lady, was in real bad shape. Crusty and looked like she had been sitting in some kind of flooded basement. I have made a blog entry, regarding my progress. It is a entry, that I will keep writing on, until the machine is finished.
