TM Crusoe Posts: 618 Location: Hull, UK | Not sure how far away it is because repairing the cooling loop is arduous and rather expensive. There's no reason the system couldn't just run on air now, even if it would get a bit hot, but it doesn't seem fitting as it's supposed to be a 'museum piece' of what the workstation was and, for better or worse, that workstation used liquid cooling. Unfortunately it used a tube and barb size that cannot be bought any more, as well as a coolant that is no longer sold due to hazardous chemicals - in other words, it was good - which means it needs all fittings replaced and every last drop of the old fluid flushed out so as not to cause a reaction. Meanwhile no equivalent pump and reservoir exists today, meaning that a second one will probably have to be concealed in the case to make it back up to capacity, extensive work also has to be done to the GPU to get it on the loop as it should be. Either way, we will see it eventually, I am sure. In the mean time, here are a few shots of what I'm dealing with; 1. Dust, lots of it. 2. More dust. 3. Thermal discoloration that won't come off, there's a lot of this. 4. Leaky old reservoir that has cracked. One of the blocks is also clogged with this gunk - perhaps that's why they call it a block? (Ba-dum-tss) In striking contrast, the Pentium III probably isn't very far away at all.

IDT WinChip Posts: 237 Location: USA | I was looking to buy one but just too expensive for me and now don't seem to be around for sale right now, but I ended up with a system with the Xeon equivalent anyway and a unique dual gpu setup. At this very moment I have a K8V-SE Deluxe saying in a female voice "system failed cpu test" through the speakers. Never knew it did that but anyway might have to do a recap even though they don't look bad. At least the board seems to be alive to an extent. I discovered after buying a SIS based 754 motherboard that the board will POST with the Turion 64 chip, listing it as a Mobile Athlon 64 6200+ but freezes at post screen. Maybe a bios update will make it work.

Chips 386 Posts: 37 | I hadn't much time for nerdy pleasures last month. Still need (and want) to build P1 machine to run Adlib Tracker on it. Yet... that's just a dream for now. Got this board for free: you may see – dust, fluff, junk. Overall 'another boring board'. That's not a problem but capacitors. Horrible. I don't have any good experience with 00s Asus.

Intel P5 Posts: 68 Location: N.E. Chips 386 Posts: 37 | @Old Guy 88 I guess you've tried Jumperfree (as they called it) both turned on and off. I can't recognize though, does the board have the jumper switch for the function soldered in; it's hard to believe that it has locked Jumperfree ON. Have you tried it only with a slot adapter or with some native slot P2 also? Edited by twm 2018-07-03 8:38 PM

Intel P5 Posts: 68 Location: N.E. I think it`s shorted somewhere but don`t know where to begin. everything gets warm even the video card but no post no video. all the parts i tried work on other boards so i think it`s toast. will try again in a few days, had to leave it for awhile

TM Crusoe Posts: 618 Location: Hull, UK | Mystery to me, all I can think is that there might be dirt or a mangled finger in the slot. Odd that a board beeps when there's no CPU, most of them just do nothing. In other news; Edited by DXZeff 2018-07-05 12:30 AM

If i start it without memory or no keyboard or no video card no post beep. only alarms high low beep if no processor I hope you have better luck with your project. looking forward to seeing it when it`s finished

IDT WinChip Posts: 237 Location: USA | I never had good luck with those in-bay liquid coolers, the pumps always made noise like that eventually and leaked somewhere inside. I really am amazed going on 10 years now, the Thermaltake pump in my Kandalf liquid cooled case is still working perfectly despite having read when the case was new the pumps were dying an early death. I did want to do a video on an in-bay cooler because that is an item that I think young cats in the liquid cooling game never saw before but they are not very common to find, probably because of the afore mentioned early pump deaths and internal leaking. I am using one of my coolermaster AIO right now and it seems to be a really good cooler so far. It does what it needs to do quietly and keeps temps quite sane ( around 38c, gets to 42-43c on a really hot day ) under rendering load with the I5 it is currently keeping in check and it was... $30 or so, new unused.

TM Crusoe Posts: 671 | And so I return to this forum, for a little update over the last number of month's. I have not had the time, to be online everywere. Anyway. I have mostly been busy, attending my Commodore machines. So I have gotten a lot of goodies the past month's. That including two Amiga500's, one in good shape and one in utterly bad shape. The one in bad shape is on the bench right now, waiting for an RF shield and a replacement keyboard. Then I got a couple of disk drives for internal mounting in both my Amiga500 and my Amiga600. Plus one for the external drive box (DF1). I have gotten an scandoubler that can be installed internally, in both an Amiga500 and an Amiga2000. It is the ScanPlusECS scandoubler, that sadly puts out a 50hz picture. And as I have no CRT monitor, and never will due to migrane attack, then I have bought an Sony lcd that can do 50hz. They are out there, yet they are few in numbers. And the Sony has build in speakers. Speaking of the one I am restoring. I cleaned one of the FAT Agnus chip's legs for some black corrotion, reseated all the chips after each legs were cleaned in IPA, and it came back to life. That took me 8 hours to fix up, and then some 3 to 4 hours extra, cleaning off rust on the bottom part of the case. The RF shield was corroded to the point of small holes appearing. Luckily there were a plastic sheet under the mainboard, else it would have been unsalvageable. It is a nice machine. The board is an Rev.5 with Kick 1.2 and the keyboard is one of them red-light ones. If I am getting a non red-light as a replacement, then I will just move the diodes over. The top part of the case were broken clean through, in three places, so I have been playing with acetone today. Just moistoned the surface of the breake. Then pushing together and reinforcing with small abs plastic rods on the backside of the case. I have used acetone for this as well. It works better than super glue. The fun thing is, that the top case will turn pink'ish in color, were acetone had made contact, so now there are 3 stripes of pink on the case. The good part, is that it is fixed again, and I can do a spray-paint. I was aware that I might have to do it. When I began welding with acetone. For the Rev5 Amiga, I was in luck. I only paid an fully functioning Amiga Tank mouse. One that I have gotten for free in the first place. It is good, as I need to do some soldering on the Amiga mainboard. It needs two new joystick port/plugs soldered on. I have 9 new spare ones in the box. Then it needs two new audio rca plugs. I have ordered two for aproximately 1 US Dollars without shipping costs. Then it needs that new shield and a new redlight keyboard. The disk drive that I have right now, needs a good clean. If it cant be made working, then I need to find yet another one. I got the original box with this Amiga as well. Minus the styrofoam for the modulator and minus the plastic bag the Amiga came shipped in. So the plan is to fix it up 100%, pack it and then I have a working Amiga if my children wishes to have one in 20 years from now. Then they will be 27 and 29 years of age. And I know they will take good care on the Amiga then. Not selling it nor torturing it. I just need to keep it in good working order untill then. On the PC side of life. I have not gotten that much. A VLB SCSI controller and an S3-805 VLB. And finally a caddy for my Plextor SCSI CD-Rom drive. It is an old one, 4xspeed read and 1xspeed write. Not much to report on the PC front. EDIT: I forgot to ask... Any suggestions on a cool, yet not feminine/childish/gay colour, to paint my Amiga500? Dark grey or 1970's-brown (diarea-brown in other words) or anything? Perhaps a natural red/green/blue with metallic effect? Are there any cool colours that people will recommend? Edited by Brostenen 2018-07-05 12:42 PM

IDT WinChip Posts: 237 Location: USA | @Brostenen - I thought this was cool looking. I like black on color type of stuff, so blue, yellow, orange, red, bright green, something bright to contrast the black. I also like the look of matte finish with gloss highlights, like lettering, striping, even when it is the same color, it looks different. If I was going crazy with an Amiga mod, I'd probably even look for a way to cut out the Amiga lettering, with a dremel-like tool or something, get some frosted clear plastic to use as a light diffuser to glue behind the lettering and back light the lettering with LED, maybe even RGB LED just so you can dial in the color and change it once in awhile so it is not a fixed color all the time. TM Crusoe Posts: 618 Location: Hull, UK | @Old Guy 88; Good to know you got refunded. Honestly still somewhat intrigued by the beeping without a CPU installed, really unusual for that to happen. Asus never did like doing things the same way everyone else did, though, with mixed results. @Brostenen; Long time no see. Not sure what to suggest for color, if you want gray perhaps that color the Amiga CD 32 was? It's fairly neutral. @WaybackTech; Unfortunately the loop can't be changed in any significant way. The old bay pump was fine, ran for around 9 years until it became intermittent, but then it wasn't a crappy Laing D5 type and those are all you can get now.

I am not really looking to mod the hell out of it. :-) Only were it is required to cover up stuff, or to get around limitations. I need to keep it as close to original state as possible. As an example, then the diskdrive was kind of shut. No life. I do hove a diskdrive from an Amiga600 and a diskdrive from an external box. Yet they both have issues. They are left overs from when I got a replacement drive for my 600 and my external drive case/caddy/thingy.... Then I have gotten a specially made floppy cable, actually two, that I can connect a standard PC floppy drive and it will work as if it is an original floppy drive. Though none are 100% perfect solutions, and so I am thinking about getting an gotek solution with one of those oled display. Speaking of colour.... I have found the exact colour that the 500-OCS are going to recieve. It is a special green colour that was on the enter key on the systems we learned IT in school. I think it was in 6'th grade or 5'th that we were introduced to this at school. It was on a system, that the state issued specially made 80186 machines with Comal80 to every publich school. I showed the colour to my fiancy yesterday, and she had never seen anything like that before. It is a kind of millitaery green, and yet it is not a millitaery green. I see it as a kind of dusty grass green colour. THIS I have never seen it before or after. So I need to source a good quality picture. I remember that the green and the red on the keyboard, just spoke out clear and loud to me, that these were colours that I could personally relate to. So the Amiga might just get that colour. Or the top part of the case will be grey-black to the grey side, and the bottom will be standard dark grey. (still multiple shades lighter than the top)

TM Crusoe Posts: 671 | I forgot to show the result, after "welding" or glueing, using acetone in liquid form, and a fine brush..... If anyone want to try this out. Be AWARE, that you have some 5/6 seconds to piece together, after applying the acetone. And you need to be carefull, that it is ONLY the surface of the breake, that you moiston with the liquid. It is strong stuff. On the plus side of things. You get the best bonding of plastic. Especially if you add reinforcement rods like I did, and you have a paste of diluted ABS plastic in acetone that you can use. Kind of cement between brick's in a brick wall. That however is not in any of the pictures. TM Crusoe Posts: 671 | Just got this in the mail. An Amiga600 HDD adaptor. It can be used, to connect an 44-pin IDE device on one side, and 40-pin on the other side. As an example, then I can have an 44-pin SD-to-IDE adaptor and have a cable going out, onto were I connect a platter drive or CD-Rom. Another cool feature, is that it will correct the diode conflict, that many CF/SD card adaptors have with the HDD led on the Amiga600. TM Crusoe Posts: 618 Location: Hull, UK | This loop is proving to be a problem. Whilst I managed to fix the original pump, but due to having to mess with the device order there is no way to fit it back into the case. The supplier of that pump has also fucked me around to a point where I'm contemplating fucking off my 'order cancellation' letter, which I was going to send recorded delivery, and just busing my way up to Newcastle to throttle someone. Still, the larger problem we have here, is that there is simply no pump on the market today which can run this loop, I'd have to make my own and that just isn't viable. As it is also not viable to cool this machine with air, it seems we may have hit a brick wall and for now this thing is going to have to sit dormant. Stupid gaymers shitting up the market as usual, fucking Laing D5 pumps, faggot ass metric fittings and stupid 'eco friendly' 'coolant' which happens to have all the properties of water. On the up side, I did use the old pump to clean the loop out further, using some out of date apple juice of all things. It is just acidic enough to eat the sludge and strip the oxide off of the metals.

TM Crusoe Posts: 671 | Today I recieved that Sony SDM-X95K monitor that I bought. It has build in speakers, and can display a 50hz image. I bought it specifically to be able to use my ScanPlusECS. Still display tiny spaghetti lines (vertical scanline-like lines), though fiddeling with clock and other settings nearly eliminates it. It has two inputs, one VGA and one DVI and each has its own speaker input. The lines are not that serious. I have seen MUCH worse, using a CL-5422-ISA. TM Crusoe Posts: 671 | Did some fiddeling with the settings on the monitor. Now I have a perfect, flawless picture. With the sharpness turned down to 0, I can mimick the image quality of an CRT. And now there are no more vertical spaghetti lines. I really love this minitor, and the speakers kind of reminds me of an old commodore or philips CRT with speakers build in. Yeah... Oh yeah...

TM Crusoe Posts: 618 Location: Hull, UK | Meanwhile... Say goodbye to this Windows install, though, as it will not be staying. This is the same Win7 install the Pentium D ran until the end of its run as main workstation and throughout Mirror's Edge. This machine was never really meant to run Win7 and only did so for needed 64-Bit support at the end, it will be reverted to XP instead. This is proving a problem though, due to the need for heavily customizing the Windows disc, I also have no floppies. Figuring out the hard disks is also going to be a challenge and part of me feels iffy about wiping out around 8TB of data - data which is backed up safely elsewhere, yes, but 8TB is definitely the largest I've ever knocked out in one run - and obviously the volumes will have to be restructured to work under XP, largely back to what they were before moving up to 7. The scars of running 7 are actually still evident in some ways, such as how the 4TB volume used for capture is actually two volumes stitched together, due to them being set up when the machine ran XP before. The machine is stable so far though and the loop does work, heat is much higher than before because water is not as good as the coolant was, the motherboard also dumps way more heat through its VRM and they're tricky to cool elegantly.

IDT WinChip Posts: 237 Location: USA | You never got one of those USB floppy emulators working? Pentium 4 stuff seems to be a thing right now, along with a Rambus craze with some Youtube channels, so here is the latest drop off to go with that, but be "in the stars". Yes, dude got another Dell. Dimension 8200. Socket 478 ( i think ) P4 1.8Ghz, Rambus 128MB Geforce 2 MX. Clean. Cleaner now with the spider web and corpse vacuum out. I recognize the name of this person as someone whom I've worked on their stuff before. Other than the spider I did not clean out this system at all. I don't know how some systems stay so clean while others are so filthy. No blown caps which is another rarity for a Dell, especially of a P4 era. This is one of those oddball OEM MATX motherboards with the PCI extension for use in a full tower. Some HP systems also used this style of board. Edited by waybacktech 2018-07-11 9:35 PM

TM Crusoe Posts: 671 | Ahhh... Gotek floppy drives! I am actually planning to get one for my 500 restauration project. That is, if I am unable to source a brand new pc drive, never used, and modded for an Amiga. Been using Rambus before, and I can tell that I really do not see any difference in real life useage, when comparing to PC-133 memory. Benchmarks though, they tell that there is a speed difference. Yet I was using an Intel VC-820 board and a slot1 P3-500 CPU. So it was kind of underpowered for the memory anyway. At that time, people was like "why? PC-133 are better" and now people craze after it. Hehe'. Naaa... It was a stable combo, that VC-820, samsung PC-800 and P3-500. Never had issues.
