@DXZeff Thanks for the info, I never blame anyone for my choices. I could`t find out anything about that card. just want a nice simple ISA card for DOS/Win95.

It's similar to the Maestro, different version of the same wavetable, different CODEC for PCM. The Maestro works great for Win95 and later DOS games with the drawback that FM isn't entirely accurate, but is better than that Ensoniq stuff was - generally great for games that run on Windows or later DOS games that can use General MIDI and had more reliable Sound Blaster code. Apparently this version doesn't have WSS support like the Maestro 32/96 does.

This is how the Maestro handles music;

Though again, I cannot vouch for or against the Analog Devices codec on the EWS64 as I've never really used cards with those on.

@DXZeff Thanks for posting the link for the Maestro.
Went into the storage room and found this buried in the rubble.
Powers on and everything still seems to work.
My first stereo from back in the 80`s
Wonder where the speakers are

It may be used as an amplifier at least, I believe :)
(oh, and I still have bunch of cassete tapes somewhere in a storage room)
The photo recalled me about The Last Unicorn animation suddenly... Silly childhood memories.

I have a few vinyl decks in the same room. Both are Soviet creatures from a different years.
This one I got from my parents:

Dusty monster from a middle of 70s, useless because of a piezo-electric head. Except for some ancient 78 RPM stuff probably.
And the 2nd one I got from a friend's shed, stamped Jan. 1985:

The stereo stayed there at least for... five years, maybe more. Cold winters, soggy autumns. Still, I took it when they decided to move out. At least it has a modern cartridge.
They take too much space.

Still using the Sanyo over here. Attempts were made to replace it over the years, but nothing else ever quite sounded as good to me despite what the audiophools might say - and such things are subjective after all, it is my stereo, it sounds better to me, fuck whether it sounds better to your scientific instrumentation or not.

There are actually photos going back to at least 1993 that have both me and this stereo in them, think it belonged to everyone in the family at some point. One of its best features are that it has a Line In and also a Line Out, making it possible to rip vinyls;
http://www.mediafire.com/file/4s8h75s6dn5bdsq/ZMB1.7z/file
Unfortunately these were taken with ungrounded outlets, a slightly worn stylus (compensated for by weighting it an extra gram) and the belt slipping just a little, but it gives you an idea. Then again, I think they were taken with the original record, which is about 50 years old now.
Think these ones were a little better though still had the ground problem due to this house being crap;
http://www.mediafire.com/file/ufizsp7zcs62jqa/MegaTronic.7z/file (Edit: Nope, old stylus again, first minute or so is bad on the left)
http://www.mediafire.com/file/onm7i4s0jyzadju/VIVE.flac/file

Amusingly the newer Panasonic that nearly replaced it sounds better at modern pop music than this old Sanyo, but that's not something I have an interest in listening to. My guess would be that the manufacturer 'tunes' them to perform best at whatever is most popular at the time.

Currently rebuilding the P3 and waiting on the replacement Athlon PSU getting here, 50 Amps of +5V should be adequate.
Oh, also, I just bought an 80cc engine for a project.

Seems like the forum software restricts the time for how long a post may be edited. Just noticed
>decks
= turntables (I forgot the right word previously).

Out of a pure curiosity I decided to compare Turtle Beach Tropez+ onboard wavetable (4 MB ROM) with another options, moreover it was easy because there's a huge comparison already on the net. I used the default DOS drivers (ver 1.1) installation, no tricks with better wavetable patches or DSP programming. I decided to go with 1.5 Atomic Edition of Duke: in the setup, General Midi set under "Choose Music Card" tab, "Music Volume" set to default number (200). So... here is the result:

I also decided to check onboard OPL3, so how it plays:

For some reason OPL music has much lower volume, so I pushed Setup music volume to 255 and then decided to normalise the whole audio a bit (up to ~-3 dB). Suddenly, even the card has dedicated Yamaha OPL3 chip, it sounds noticeably different comparing to both Dosbox emulator and SB16 OPL3 from the demo above. I wonder if CS4232 has any FM capabilities (its datasheet says 'no': "The Synthesizer device is externally located on the Peripheral Port and could be an FM synthesizer such as the OPL3, or a wave table synthesizer such as the CS9233")

The system used for playback:

Green backlight! That's great (couldn't say the same about any modern blue stuff, that's toxic IMO)
Just noticed, I got 50 GB on MediaFire, lol.
The Zombies sound fine, and eurodance stuff isn't that bad too. At least, for me (and recalls about Dr. Alban suddenly, lol; & seems like my card doesn't support 192 KHz properly). Thank you for sharing.

PS I'm afraid of driving a bicycle here - the traffic is... it's just mad here: too many cars.
Ungrounded outlets is an old curse here too.

Thats awesome, i just restored a 1984 Aiwa F-250 tape deck, nice little unit but a total bastard to change the belt! It's going with my Onkyo setup, not top end but more than good enough for me, have a set of vintage Jamo Compact 700 shelf speakers also of 80's vintage, more than happy with this set up and had it for a good long time now

@waybacktech
That's a comfy room. And the illuminated equalizer catches attention instantly. Much faster than Darth Vader'ish figure, lol.
I saw SX3600 in a local vintage audio shop, priced around $500. Probably a high price for the unit, yet it's still more affordable than nowadays entry level Onkyos and Pioneers. And maybe a better choice too.

@CyrixInstead
I met the similar deck back in the last winter - saw it in... I would say, by a strange chance: sometimes I'm looking through used equipment adverts - here's tons of them on a local popular web board. So... I found there a cheap K5-133 system back in the last december. And its seller was... let's say, passionate audiophile. I've spent a hour there while supporting a sudden audio-related talk. And there was quite similar-looking Aiwa which he praised a lot.
Well, I still haven't any good tape deck, however I got K5 for a price of cheap wine.
Your Onkyo - what year is it from?

Yeah, I think WaybackTech's audio gear probably blows mine out of the water, but then I'm not sure the neighbors would like me when the nails started dancing out of their floorboards.
Sure I know someone with the same Onkyo gear as CyrixInstead, can't remember who though.

Your FM comparison, meant to say something about that - nice CPU by the way - mostly that it does vary hugely by card. Some time ago we compared a PAS16 and Sound Blaster 16, they both use the YMF262 as was common, but they behave a little differently, if we take the SB16 (CT1740) first; http://www.mediafire.com/file/1coiyu5y8k5bis5/SBF_ONWD.flac/file
Audio is acceptable and it does what you'd expect, interesting things happen at ~1:25 for one reason or another.

Then the PAS16 (possibly my favorite card) playing the same file; http://www.mediafire.com/file/xy15y64s800bb20/PAS_ONWD.flac/file
These are normalized to the same level, so the PAS seems to be generally louder. Also it behaves a lot differently at the ~1:24 marker to the SB16. If you actually look at the output you can see that some waveforms are shaped differently or even inverted, they look very dissimilar overall. Odd when you consider this is the same FM chip. Looking back now, the SB16 suddenly seems rather flat and lifeless by comparison.
This is something emulation does not capture, the subtle differences in how things were wired and the analog circuitry for the last few inches or so of board.

I really like the PAS16 and would argue it has the better output, it's basically what the SB16 should have been and it's a shame not as many games fully support it, there are provisions for driving a speaker inside the case - the SPEAKER header on the card is an OUTPUT for driving a speaker, not an input, don't connect it to the motherboard because the amp will blow up. The card does actually replicate the PC speaker out but not by connecting to the motherboard in that way, it sniffs the ISA bus directly. The amplifier is 4 Watts and can easily destroy most passive speakers if you start being silly with it, which can be fun if you're so inclined. The board is better made, the components of higher quality. it's a shame they had to get found out for monetary fraud as I'd love to have seen them kick Creative's ass.

Still working on the daul P3, have had some problems, strange problems. Also recapping a motherboard.

As for bikes, yeah, I've seen what the roads and traffic are like in your part of the world and apparently if it's not them, it's stray dogs or other animals in some areas, probably is wise not to put yourself at such risk really and just walk, take the bus or something, can't blame you really.

PAS record - while looking on its waveform I would say it was processed with a slight mastering: such... I don't know how to say - it's like limiter/compressor effect. That's my first impression.
I wonder if PAS amplifier has (kind of) limiter circuit to give such effect. That's a puzzle.

And honestly, I'm trying to catch a strange behavior on 1:24 but I cannot recognize it. I'm unable to use headphones ATM. Though, a difference you've noticed - it may appear because of a different stereo mix, i.e. how both boards realize stereo output for YM chips: as I understood, YM262 does require a separate DAC as an accompanying chip.
Above all,
>the subtle differences
do their work. And recognizing them (when you're able to) brings some joy, heh.
Can you share that midi file btw? (the track is quite outstanding IMO) And to name your preffered DOS midi player?

I will check the story of the brand. Media Vision cards weren't common in this area, I believe. The same story with GUS. And later in mid-90s AWE32 got almost the whole market while the rest was taken by cheap Opti & ESS-based stuff. (And Vibra too: I still remember a classmate who wrote some music using FastTracker which did work fine with his Vibra board)

PS here's a huge bike movement, yet I'm not a fan of a group events and... that's still dangerous. Sigh, I wish the city may get any bike paths among with highways: because a highway without such path is inhuman IMO. And sadly, bus is the choice if you haven't a car.
Good luck with fixing that MB!

OPTi and ESS cards aren't bad at all though, some of the OPTi ones even used genuine Yamaha FM chips on them, the 929 is a pretty good substitute for a real Sound Blaster and its CD interface works if you can be bothered to play with the jumper and the CONFIG.SYS.
That file isn't'a MIDI, it's from a rather flaky tracker that throws a fit about running on a real machine, you'll probably have to run it from inside Windows for whatever reason - http://www.adlibtracker.net/ - the module playing was ONWARD.A2M, so type ADT2PLAY MODULES\NULA\ONWARD.A2M from the directory to get that one going. Much as I dislike the tracker, it does a good job of highlighting inaccuracies in DOSBox.

Was gonna stay quiet on it, but two machines are back in the realms of running;
Uploaded Image Pentium OverKill 83
Uploaded Image Pentium III.

Odds are one of these will get a video this month as the machine I planned uses a very specific monitor, that monitor was thought to be dead but I discovered something which suggests it can be fixed. That fix is probably a long ways away and will likely be costly, so yeah, gonna skip ahead to the POD or P3 for now, at least if something else doesn't seem like a better option.

Adlib tracker - that's not a trivial thing, it brings impressive results: some modules are impressive. They really are. As if the tracker helps to reveal the true sound of OPL chip (a bit pathetic line, yeah).
Yet, ADT2 Player is unable to perform well on my 486SX DOS machine (or it may be me who is lazy to configure the system properly). Also, I got 'out of memory' error while trying to run the tracker on that 16 MB (XMS, no EMS) rig.

I decided to set up Pentium-class system before sharing any playback results. For now, the player gives more of a cacophony instead of a songs.

@DXZeff
Mediastation - I like its interface: those Thumb buttons are freaking cool! And SayIt icon, and the colour scheme. I adore the whole thing. (And I suspect that Mullet Man is climbing to new horizons on his blasting video editing trip)

As for the thread's topic, I got these SDs recently: still not an old tech, but... well, "new old stock" and so on

Yours probably are from the same years (06-07): quite close to the moment when Seagate swallowed Maxtor.

Another small haul. Not an abomination (I quite like S3) but... I have not_a_good experience with Virge: I had a few around '99-02 and both produced blurry image even at 800x600. I hope this one will be crisp enough

So today I bought a Microsoft Sidewinder. As the name could suggest, this is the first gen of joystick from Microsoft. It's the only all analogic stick from the company and thus, makes it the only Microsoft Sidewinder product compatible with non-Windows machines (there is also the 3d pro (which I have) which supports an analog mode thru a switch on the back). When I get a new stick I always dismantle them for cleaning and greasing so there's a picture of the inside.

Compare to the 3d pro, or the newer ones, this one feels and look cheaper, but hey, t'was their first and also the low end, since the better one was the 3d pro.

That's a Tualatin P3 by the looks of things, Old Guy 88, never had a board that runs those out of the box.

I have a stack of 250GB IDE drives left over from when the Pentium D was new, it moved over to larger SATA drives eventually, though.

Could swear that's a PCB revision of an Athlon board I have, they're good boards. Notice that second set of pads for a BIOS chip? Yeah, that'd be where the BIOS lived if it had Socket 462 on the board. Strange thing. Then again, as this one's an 815, maybe not, but that's how they did the Via ones. The C-Media audio Chaintech used wasn't too bad either, as in you can use it in DOS and it sort of works, even has FM, but it's obviously not 100% accurate.

Anyway, BIOS and manual (assuming I left those enabled on the forum attachment thingy, will MediaFire it shortly if not).
