TM Crusoe Posts: 671 | I bought this Tseng ET-4000 PCI card a while back. Actually... I bought an ET-4000 ISA card a while back, and the seller (shop in Germany) reported back that they had none left. Some sort of storage inventory error of some sort. So they asked me, to pick something else and I picked this card. I did not even have to pay additional fee or something like that. All in all... I recieved this card for only 9.99 Euro, plus 10 Euro for the shipping. Can't complain.... All that said... I finally had time to test it yesterday. And it is working like a charm. I was a bit worried, that it could not be used without the daughterboard, yet it is working just like any other VGA card. The best part is the signal quality. It is strong and on a LCD screen, there is none of those spaghetti lines. (I am speaking of those vertical white or beige ones) The card is build solid. Thick PCB and good components. Just a wonderfull card. Though it really need a 486 system, in order to be used era correctly. And in that case, I am thinking about something in between highend and mid-range 486 systems. Something like a dx2-80 to dx4-100 with PCI slots and 16mb of Ram. And it is for those that want something a tad different in their collection of old hardware. TM Crusoe Posts: 618 Location: Hull, UK | That is a truly lovely card, looks like it would have video acceleration or something if you found the proper driver for it, but that is probably long since lost to history as is the case with many of these. Meanwhile I guess I should show this here; I have big plans for this camcorder. Here's a quick clip of it running, though with no good way to digitize it currently it isn't doing it justice, the picture quality on a good VHS tape is surprisingly sharp all things considered;

TM Crusoe Posts: 671 | Cool video recorder. I once, back many years, made a shortmovie using one that looks like that. The theme was dispair, loss and greef. So the movie is about suicide. Heh'.... I made some woman in the class cry. So mission accomplished I guess. Regarding the ET4k card. It is for some rgb processing daughterboard or for a microscope or something. The second chip is an ET4000w32p as well. :-P

TM Crusoe Posts: 618 Location: Hull, UK | So it's not a V33? Now that is unusual. Back in college I made a documentary using 16mm film, it wasn't great or anything but it was the only camera I had that could operate outside at the time, the digital one used to film for the internet lacked the capabilities or capacity to be of any use for the project. At the end of it all they wouldn't let me show the film at college for fear that it might scare people or some bullshit, it wasn't that in truth, it was because the teacher hated me and did everything he cold to try and fail me or have me thrown out. Jokes on him, I guess, because I was going to leave on the first day, I only stayed because he made the mistake of telling me he wanted me out. Either way, I spent all that time riding around the country filming in rain and thunder storms for nothing, all that hassle of getting the film developed and digitized, it sucked. Anyway, film is a technology I would never go back to for video, it was simply horrible to work with, but I have no gripes going back and playing with VHS again because that stuff just works. TM Crusoe Posts: 671 | Yes. You are right. I must have read wrong. Yet what is a V33 chip? What can it do? All I know, is that the chip might be named viper or something like that, after some google searching.

TM Crusoe Posts: 618 Location: Hull, UK | Primarily it was used as a video interface and accelerator, but its video acceleration was primarily aimed at Vector Quantization, not at Motion Compensation as was used in later CODECs - short version; it would help playing something like Video 1 but it will do nothing in the way of things like MPEG. Some Viper chips were hooked up to Zoran MPEG decoders with a second buffer or were wired to allow video capture in some way, it greatly depended on the device.

IDT WinChip Posts: 237 Location: USA | You need a BMW sticker on that camera now. Here are a couple of photos, not mine, of a couple camera's I have. First one is a vintage, early 80's or about there Sears Video/Sound camera. Very serious lens on this thing. This is one of those camera's that had no mechanism to record anything, so it was made to go with one of those portable VCR's that you could lug around and use in your car's 12v cig lighter. Mine is like brand new, I don't think it was ever used, original box/packaging and cables. The second is the Sears VHS camcorder I was telling you about in your live chat. I think this was made by RCA for Sears in the early/mid 90's. Works great as well.I have the case for it, bad battery but runs off wall adapter/charger. B&W view finder and does playback. It might be one of those little CRT ones, probably I would think for the era. I can't believe it would be an LCD being a cheaper 90's camera. TM Crusoe Posts: 671 | Found this for sale locally.... Compatible with DVD, Playstation1, Playstation2, Commodore64 and Amiga600. Wonderfull picture quality. Nearly as good as CRT, when using Scart cables. 20 Euro as a pickup offer. It has S-VHS, Scart, Component and VGA input. No HDMI as the television is too old. Good picture and no lagging. Only problem is a slight ghosting in Workbench 2.10 yet nothing too annoying. More pictures of the television in use... TM Crusoe Posts: 618 Location: Hull, UK | I miss having my big screen set up, but I've nowhere to put it and can't move it anyway because it is too large and heavy, so for now I just have to hope the sun isn't bleaching the screen or something. Otherwise, I ordered these a while ago; Captured images are only from the AI Gotcha as I don't have a battery for the Snappy right now. These devices are cheap and don't really have much if any use today, but they're novel in their own right if only for how they use the parallel port for something it really wasn't meant for. Naturally real-time video is not possible and, so far as I am aware, the Snappy's preview is a small monochrome image every few seconds, its manual is amusingly sarcastic and such though. The grimy quality of the image has some subtleties which remind me of some of the lesser magazines from that time, perhaps they used similar technology if not the same devices. Should also add, props to whoever designed the AITech box, looks good - Wacky yellow text with shadow, check. That chassis design, check. That device is possibly the more interesting because the manual suggests it needs your PC to have an FPU and appears to use some kind of compression to stuff the images into the LPT port. Snappy is an older, more bare bones approach. Sad thing is, they still lock onto more signals than most modern devices will for analog video, or the AITech does, the Snappy will be guilty of major false advertising if it doesn't and I've no reason do doubt it can snap frames from a VCR or SNES. Only found info, that states that it resulted in a NDOS disk. Yet I want to go deep.... I want to know what is going on. Yet all I can find is statements that tell nothing.

IDT WinChip Posts: 237 Location: USA | I remember those capture boxes. I sure do recognize that computer case shown. I would not mind at all having the camcorder and vcr shown on the box personally, them there look pretty fancy. So this little device is probably, what, CIRCA 1996? with the win3.1 95 NT OS designation.

TM Crusoe Posts: 618 Location: Hull, UK | Damn server keeps freezing up due to cold weather, might see about sitting it on a heat mat or something for the winter. The Snappy is from 1995 and the AI Gotcha 2 is from 1997 so far as I know. Also forgot to say I like that first camera, looks rather utilitarian. For fun I decided to compare the PAS16's FM to the SB16. They both use the same chip, so in theory they should sound identical, but this highlights something emulators will never be able to replicate; subtle differences in circuitry, or I imagine that's what's going on anyway. http://www.mediafire.com/file/xy15y64s800bb20/PAS_ONWD.flac http://www.mediafire.com/file/1coiyu5y8k5bis5/SBF_ONWD.flac Notably the PAS is 'louder' as the files were normalized to the same values. The square and its delay sound quite different in places, if you actually look at the waveform there are some major differences, some parts of it even seem to be inverted, which is strange as theoretically the same chip should produce the same wave every time regardless of which board it is stuck to. If you mix them, the waves are not in phase at all. I still prefer the PAS overall but that's probably subjective. Used AdLib Tracker 2 and one of the included modules, ONWARD.A2M, which is a remake of DOPE.MOD from the demo of the same name. This tracker is a pieceashit, you have no idea how much hassle it was to get it running; To run it on the PAS16 was quite easy, I had to play with the configuration INI, then drop into WFW and back out for whatever reason (gives an Out of Memory if I try to run in WFW) and I simply put that down to not using a genuine SB or the Pentium being weird anyway... no, the hard part came when trying to run it on a real SB. First I tried the U5S and found that the tracker would crash with random text, the player would act similarly to how it did on the PAS16 initially, make random garbage sounds or crash, so I figured either it wanted an FPU (though the site doesn't say this and why you'd need one to control a YMF262 is a mystery to me) or else it just didn't like that system for whatever reason, it's an unusual CPU running an unusual version of DOS though the SB Pro 2 is just like any other. Tried the Nx586 because it was the nearest thing I had to hand with an SB card, the SB16, that just gave me a black screen but I'll let the program get away with it that time. Then I start using normal machines, neither 386 board (as I wanted to discount it having issues with the C&T) will run, just those garbage sounds in the player. K5 (borrowing the SB 16 and an SB Pro 2) gives no joy either. Eventually I got the tracker to run under Windows 95 on the POD with an SB16 though the visuals don't work, so I can't see what I'm doing. Honestly I wonder how the world doesn't fall apart with the levels of incompetence people continually exhibit these days. One has to wonder if I'm just unlucky or if the author never tested outside of emulation because the way it behaves suggests a rookie mistake regarding extra initialization needed on later OPL3 cards not being done, but the problem is that the website has plenty of photos suggesting the author ran it on real hardware. I'm stumped as to why it is so bent on not working. Anyway, the module only uses 2 operator sounds, so it's not pushing things as hard as it might, but it seemed like a good one to demo the differences between them.

TM Crusoe Posts: 618 Location: Hull, UK | Having played with BNC networks a little, I needed to set up a working grounding. Short version of the story is - the Pentium II is working, but that 'Yamaha' 744 is not and I simply cannot find one which does the stuff my old one did. I came to a compromise in that I do have SYXG-50 that I can use for XG testing as it should have the balls, even if it lags it doesn't matter as I wouldn't use it for the final render anyway as work would be passed to the MU90R then, I was only intent on a 74X for this convenient testing, but I can use a different hard wavetable in games as I'm not as fussy there and can still hook up the MU if I really want to anyway. This left me with less requirements - working SPDIF, wavetable, some DOS capabilities (they don't have to be very good) and preferably a PC Speaker hookup. Couldn't tick all of the boxes, but got close (at a hefty cost) with any luck; The K6 is also being reborn with the 5AGM2 motherboard and it also needed a sound card, almost got a Fiji, but ended up with one of these; This has destroyed my balance so they will be the last things for a while. Still, I have plenty of stuff to be getting on with in the meantime and honestly can't think of anything else that will be needed for some time yet. My argument is that AWE cards cost the same or more, but they sound like ass and the SB16 ability isn't worth is as their extra features aren't useful to me, leaving that as the only incentive. These cards are at least interesting, hopefully they work. The Malibu wavetable sounds quite strange at times, but it's growing on me.

TM Crusoe Posts: 618 Location: Hull, UK | Promising so far, but then it is the model I had in the original K6 anyway, so I knew it was good already and was looking for that model specifically. Ironically Chaintech only ever rated it to go up to ~400MHz versus that TMC which was rated to go much faster, as such the BIOS can't even display the clock properly - even if updated, the old one did this too, but it doesn't appear to matter, the board is stable anyway. It's not complete yet, but in the mean time, the Pentium II pretty much is and is only missing one minor peripheral that it doesn't really need. Here's a quick test of Duke 3D at 1024x768 (Software rendering) though; Otherwise trying to finish up filming for the VI9.

IDT WinChip Posts: 237 Location: USA | Are you running the Yamaha sound card in the PII? Did you ever see if Chaintech released beta bioses for that motherboard with support of higher processors including the K6-II/III+ stuff? That was one little dirty trick motherboard manufacturers did back then to "unofficially" support certain processors. My FIC-503+ was one such board that only had beta bioses released to support those mobile K6 + chips. Other than the chips with cache built in, it shouldn't matter if the bios reads the correct speed or not. I haven't bought anything computer related for awhile, though I have been finding a few idea's I might like to mess with along with some really cheap deals. Case in point, this dual slot 1 ATREND motherboard with processors and 1GB of ram already installed for the very nice price of $25. Maybe this board will work better than the P2B-DS I had last year. TM Crusoe Posts: 618 Location: Hull, UK | Nah, that YMF744 I got didn't work out and is a suspected fake and I still can't find one like my old YMF724, so I'm using the Pinnacle and an SB Vibra. Not elegant at all and I've yet to figure out if I want to find a daughterboard or just use Software XG, not bothered about XG being available to DOS stuff, only really want that for composing, time will tell I suppose. The Matrox G100, just like what was in the old P2, is the killer card of this system, fast VESA and fast GUI, nothing else in my inventory really touches it, discovered that with the old system by accident when it kept outrunning other systems it otherwise wouldn't have done. If Chaintech did have a BIOS like that I've not seen it, never fixed it on the old board and can't be bothered on this one either, it works perfectly aside from reporting only 400MHz, a purely cosmetic issue. My buying of stuff should be falling off, this P2/K6 stuff is merely replacement for what was lost. Remaining things are really only to finish things up or worthwhile improvements if I happen to spot them at a good price, pretty much got everything I wanted when I set out and then some. Still, that board looks OK, no use to me though as I like the P6DGU already. Doubt that one will be there long, though, seems a few people have noticed it.

IDT WinChip Posts: 237 Location: USA | It's interesting ever since you mentioned the SPDIF lacking on the 724 cards, that is something I have kept an eye out for, not that I have any use for such feature but because it is true, seems like none of them, including any of mine of varying PCB types have that area populated. Must have been a special "prosumer" version, probably not quite a true Audiophile grade card, maybe a entry level Audiophile / Prosumer audio card, SPDIF would be more for higher end audio equipment back then, where as now days that is pretty common on audio gear in some form. It's interesting though how many, even new ones have shown up on ebay lately. For awhile, you didn't see them except in rare instances. Funny how that works. I did a little googling out of curiosity on a bios for your Chaintech board, I found 2 you might have a look at and if you feel adventurous you might try. The files do download, I tested just to make sure before posting the links. This one is probably the latest bios, modded to support 128GB drives, says nothing else, but I figured it was worth a try - https://www.bios-mods.com/forum/Thread-Chaintech-5AGM2-128GB This page has the board and BIOS file on their list for supporting the K6 + processors, which would make me think it should also recognize higher clock speed chips. http://web.inter.nl.net/hcc/J.Steunebrink/k6plus.htm

TM Crusoe Posts: 618 Location: Hull, UK | I'm running the updated BIOS already. Honestly the misreported frequency is not concerning to me, like I said, the old one did that too and it runs just fine. Matrox cards, I like those, actually ran past a bunch of their editing cards in a place I cleared out years ago but couldn't afford to take them so they got sold on. Haven't much to put here right now myself, the K6 is running aside from needing the serial headers making up for it and the P2 is pretty much completed, hoping to get a song done with it to break it in properly as that's its main job. Still need to sort out what to do about the lack of Yamaha wavetable but running without one has proven I don't need it for games, so I probably will just go with software if it doesn't slow the system down too much. If it does, I'm stuck as the DB50XG won't cut it, might have to gut an MU80 or something and be creative with it. Also have been messing with VPNs for a laugh and to see if I can tunnel IPX packets for stuff like Doom through one, as yet it has simply proven awkward and nothing productive has come from it.
