TM Crusoe Posts: 671 | Yeah... Barrel batteries on Amiga500's are only found on the 500+ motherboards (ECS). On a 500 (OCS), there are no barrel batery. They were used on memory upgrade kits, that had real time clock. Though a badly leaked memory kit, will leak onto the 500 board. 2000, 3000 and 4000 boards had barrel batteries too. The only "normal" models that had no batteries, were 500, 600 and 1200. I don't know about them 1500, 2500 and 3500 models, if they had any barrel batteries at all. As they were specialised sub models. Come to think about it. I don't even know if the original Amiga (later named A-1000), CDTV and CD32 had any battery at all. Uhhh.... Allmost forgot this.... Earlier today, I found some 80's style danish candy at the store. I have not eaten them since the late 80's or early 90's. They are a kind of hard vanilla nougat, with salt-licorice-powder mixed into it, in layers plus a core of that powder. So I fired up my C64, loaded up Winther Games and had a round of bobsled while eating them. Totally retro feel. TM Crusoe Posts: 618 Location: Hull, UK | I don't recall seeing one in my CD32 and with the 500, the differences between revisions would explain why I have no memory of such a battery in mine. Figured I'd just check in and say that some system files on my K5 were indeed corrupted after running Blood V1.0 on the live stream, nothing major and it was quickly fixed, but yeah, coincidence or not the game sure seems to bring me bad luck. Edit: Also wanted to add, production is in progress; Things are slow though as some of this means keeping on top of 3 machines at once as well as a VCR and games console, all whilst trying to grab audio separately knowing I'll have to sync it by hand later (thanks StarTech, god what an oversight) so yeah, you can probably tell what I've moved on to. Basically I'm going to have an unlisted update to explain what happened in length because I feel bad for breaking my word of the PPro being next, but it probably will appear later anyway, my plan being an "Odds and sods" video which covers the PPro and PII quickly as well as a few changes to other machines and the older CD burner. I have a feeling this capture video will be long though. Edited by DXZeff 2017-08-12 6:11 AM

IDT WinChip Posts: 237 Location: USA | I wanted to sit down last night and play some blood on Calisto, but ended up spending the night dicking with the sound, and dealing with having swapped in a AIW Rage 128 Pro card who's drivers from AMD's site screwed up 95 briefly. I forgot the Doamond monster card doesn't work well for DOS, not to mention the DOS emulation wasn't installed from the drivers I have and I didn't feel like trying to make that all work, so I pulled out an ESS Audiodrive 1868 and installed it into the machine. After dealing with IRQ conflicts, I finally managed to get everything working again, although 95 is stuck at boot wanted to do a damn scandisk. Anyway the ESS I like actually, wavetable sounds pretty good, but so far I've only tested it in Blood's setup, and for some reason Blood isn't playing the music during the game... the version I have on my server I copied over came from GOG, so it's different than the one I beat on the Ppro, which who the hell knows what I did with that version so I guess I'll have to plug up the Ppro so I can copy that off.. Anyway blood runs quite nice on this system, though Stereo sound seems to be something the game doesn't know how to do with this sound card, but I can live with that frankly, but Blood does crash switching between scenarios I noticed. Seems like no matter what version of Blood you have, there is always something about it that doesn't work. Maybe I will actually get to do some gaming today on the system instead of working on it in preparation which always seems to be how things go for me, takes longer trying to find what I need or get things working than actually doing it. Guess I'll let 95 do a full scan of the drive, which will be an hour or more, so it will be happy and stop telling me a new hard drive my have developed bad sectors :P Windows has and will ALWAYS be stupid I sware.

UMC U5S Posts: 54 | So I've installed the 30-pin SIPP->SIMM fix and it worked. Cool. Now is the time to make a decision on upgrading the CPU. The crystals currently on the motherboard are 40MHz, 23MHz, and 16MHz. I don't understand this but it seems like I can jumper one of these speeds to be the high and low (turbo) setting. The CPU is a 25MHz 386DX which is what I want to replace. Since the board supports pipeline cache I'm considering a Cyrix 486 and FasMath but if these are shit I'll go with a trusty old AM386-40 and 387. What do you guys think?

TM Crusoe Posts: 618 Location: Hull, UK | @WaybackTech; Ha, think I've said it before, but "Callisto" was the name of that Opteron I lost years ago, at that point I named everything after the moons of Jupiter though I suspect you got the name from elsewhere. What I've yet to figure out is why the machine occasionally appears to be on the network despite having being gone for over a decade, I'd guess some really old windows install I'm still using has its presence cached somehow. I can even see the share names, I just can't access them, no surprises there. Blood is a bit odd with music, I remember setting it to "AWE32" once and getting FM music in game with an AWE64, never quite figured out what that was about and just put it down to the A.S.S. being a bit rubbish usual. Apogee were always good for providing questionable sound drivers, Duke Nukem II is notorious for having problems on almost everything but a real Sound Blaster and even then, still having problems on some machines. The driver used in Build games has no stereo FM capabilities and will sometimes decide an IRQ or DMA is wrong for no apparent reason. Not sure who wrote the driver in Terminal Velocity, but they published it and the driver there can throw fits too, especially when using a GUS - on mine it causes pulsing white noise at the start of each song, seemingly triggered by the drumkit. Thought it was bad RAM at first as that was failing tests, but it still did it once I replaced the offending bank. @486u; I was pondering that. But yeah, haven't had any issues running a DLC-40 on that HOT-307H and it just nips the toes of an ISA 486-25, I use an IIT FPU though. Well, I say use, more like occasionally look at because nothing really wants it for anything, but it came with the board, so it can stay there just in case because I don't like seeing empty sockets. Good to know you got the pinout sussed anyway, stuff like that always makes me a little nervous when I run into it myself. -------- Think I've just about done with capturing video of capturing video. Unfortunately the video capture has broken on the P66 again so I might have to use an old file in the video, not so much of a problem as I can still demo the software anyway and do have it scripted to not how unreliable it can be, especially in such a complicated machine. I'll try changing the IRQ and Buffer address first, only problem being that this means taking the card out. The card is so huge that I have to remove every other card to get it out as I have to tilt it diagonally to remove it. I thought it would be OK to share IRQ15 with the wavetable but apparently not, I'll try moving it to IRQ12 as the Wavetable doesn't do that and I have no PS/2 port. Failing that, I'm not sure what else to try because I'm out of interrupts, could shift it to IRQ7 as there's little chance of accessing a printer at the same time as recording - in fact, there's basically zero chance of doing anything at the same time as recording. Could perhaps go for IRQ10 as I have that startup option set to disable the LAN anyway, so it wouldn't run the risk of doing nasty things to the Ethernet card. UMC U5S Posts: 54 | Yeah I'm not sure this could work, the chipset is a C & T chipset with a 20MHz marking. The documents I could find say that the board supports a 386DX-25 processor too. Maybe it's because the chipset can handle the extra 5MHz or (better) maybe it's because the chipset and CPU can be asynchronous and the chipset only requires the 40MHz crystal intact.

TM Crusoe Posts: 618 Location: Hull, UK | Yeah, perhaps not then, without documentation for the board it's beyond me to start throwing guesses out there. In other news, I got capture working, turns out it just didn't like the signals I was putting into it. The down-side is that I only have copyrighted stuff to hand, but I decided to be ballsy and attempt a 16-Bit Half-Res capture; I tried at 15fps and it did surprisingly well, seems to just about handle 10fps but with some synch and choppiness, not bad for a 66MHz system though - the resulting 10fps file which will show the HCW header in a Hex editor or a utility like MediaInfo. Captured pretty much all I need, so unless I find a way to use something less likely to cause copyright flags, it'll be moving on to filming tomorrow, then voice recording, then editing with syncing all the bloody audio up because the StarTech doesn't do audio and I have to capture it separately and sync manually with that. Piece of junk. It's a shame I can't record full resolution uncompressed, because it would actually look quite good. We can do stills like that though; This is a bad example however, Ristar and a large number of other Mega Drive games actually look better with Composite or RF because of how they used dithering, S-Video is too sharp and you can see individual pixels where the developers actually wanted them the blurry edges, it gave the illusion of more colors than the palette actually allowed for. Also note the resolution difference between PAL and NTSC systems - this second shot, taken from a Composite source, was running on a PAL MK-I system where the NTSC was running on a Japan-only system with S-Video. Slow 8088 Posts: 3 Location: /dev/null | More fun with the sun. So today, my HP 3 button mouse (model DY651A) came in. I decided to use a USB KVM I got for $6 at a thrift store (with a Wireless N router, old print server, and AC power cable in the same bag included) to hook up my Sun to my main setup. Ran into a few issues with the keyboard at first but it's all up and running. IDT WinChip Posts: 237 Location: USA | Tower arrived today. Motherboard is a bit newer than I originally thought. Looks like it is actually from 96 and not 95. Bios ID indicates this board is an Mtech R418, and I was wrong, the memory slots are 8 30 pin and 2 72 pin, quite an interesting combination since usually you see 2+2 or 4+2 configurations on boards. Memory currently installed ins 80NS, whew! at least it's not the 100NS stuff I pulled out of my AT&T 386. Video card, I have no idea what chip it is because I don't want to peal the sticker off, just know that it's a Cardinal Technologies card, which I will look up later at some point if I have too. Cool I think , they were a really big name in the late 80's and early 90's, sponsoring shows like Computer Chronicles. Beauty trim cover for the back of the case. Good case. Solid steel, but not overly heavy considering. Strange someone installed an external cmos battery, which isn't connected btw, when the motherboard has a coin battery.... perhaps it was used for another board in the cases history but the wire seems to reach this board's header just about perfectly so...who knows... Good option in the bios for memory timings as well. I realized that I do have a full at power supply in a Gateway 2000 desktop I will be parting out, so I won't need to buy one, but I will have to mod the power supply to convert it from the side mounted power switch to a cabled switch like standard AT power supplies use. TM Crusoe Posts: 618 Location: Hull, UK | Sorry for my silence the past few days, things have been going on. In part, the WinTV video is possibly the most strenuous I've ever attempted to work on, also I've been dealing with the wheel build for my bike and have been fitting that. I should probably say now that from what I can tell, something is on the horizon. I'm not going to say what it is, but if it happens, it's serious and I might not be around for a few weeks, the website might even drop out for some time, but I'll be able to announce that well in advance should it come to it or else temporarily shift the hosting to another line. It isn't anything bad and it probably won't happen, but if it does I'll document what is going on as it goes on. Anyway, this WinTV video. Voice is recorded, took a while because I kept sounding exhausted, it is very warm here right now. Tomorrow I should be able to move onto filming things, but there have been setbacks at every turn, nothing horrible, nothing broken, just things taking longer than they should due to heat. In other news, I couldn't help myself; Not often you see an older card without any tuner. Not sure where I'll put it yet, but I've wanted one which used the internal overlay cable for a long time. I have a feeling it will end up living in the OverDrive or something. Right, well, now I really have to sleep, my face is going numb and my ability to read or make coherent sense of things is dwindling. Always nice to see everyone else making progress with their own projects at any rate. I'll probably come back and look properly when I wake up, there's no point me writing a direct reply right now as I'll probably miss something important or just type nonsense, too warm, too tired.

TM Crusoe Posts: 671 | #486u Nice... Really nice... It really looks like a fun machine to poke around with. As for me... Today I recieved the 1541-II disk drive for my Commodore64, complete and including 50 disks. Going through the disks, I came across an old thing from the past. There on one of the disks, a Lucky Luke sticker. Back then, they were sold with chewing gum. I had forgot all about them gums from back in the days, and looking at it, I can clearly recall the chemical taste of those cheap things. Really a pleasent surprise to see it again. Regarding the drive... It is working 100% as if it were new. Slightly yellow, though not serious. Every disk that I have tested so far, seems to be working. Need to hunt down disk surface test-tools. Sounds like lots of fun at your place. :-P Really fun to use them old 8-bit machines, yet I can not really make up my mind, what old computer are the coolest to play with. To me it is all equally fun..... I guess it just boils down to 80's to early 90's computers in general are the coolest. Well.... Yesterday I recieved money for the AWE32-CT3900 wich I have set up for sale. Someone in USA bought it, so I went out to find something in the shop, to go with the card. A kind of extra gift that are not computer related. Hopefully he will have a fun time, trying this out. As I have seen a lot of video's on youtube about these kind of products, that people are trying out as a challenge. It is not canned food or anything, and it is safe to ship with hardware. Then I got a text message from the TV/Radio/Computer repair man. Telling me that my Amiga600 have been recapped and are ready for pickup. It will only cost me some 79 US Dollars (67.25 euro) and that is for labour pay plus parts plus 30 minutes of bunin-test. Wich is kind of great, as the sallory are much higher here in Denmark, as compared to a country like Germany. I think it is aprox 40 to 60 percent of the Danish. I am soooo looking forward to get the 600 back again, and I can now save up for a mem-upgrade plus a scandoubler. Hopefully I can sell the 8-Bit ET3000 that has EGA and VGA output plus my SocketA bundle in order to get the last missing money for them Amiga parts. Edited by Brostenen 2017-08-19 1:26 PM

Slow 8088 Posts: 3 Location: /dev/null | So today I picked up a pretty darn good DOS machine, and I might get rid of some of my surplus Packaged Hell Pentium 1 systems. It's an HP Vectra VA, featuring: -A 200MHz Pentium Pro (Rarer now thanks to scrappers obviously) -A High quality HP Motherboard (think like on the 9000 series computers but with Intel chips) -A Matrox Millennium video card -A Sound Blaster Vibra 16, wired to an internal speaker so no external speakers are needed for DOS gaming. -A generic RTL8139 Ethernet card (somewhat out of place) Opening up the case was easy, 2 latches in the front. Putting it back together meant fiddling with finicky rails however. The same went with the shroud, the picture guides on HP's old manual were useless and I spent a while fiddling with it since I didn't take a picture of how it went in. To get it up and going, I installed a 100GB HDD, fiddled with EZ-BIOS till I got something working, and installed 95C (while cancelling the IE4 setup). However, getting drivers configured was a bit harder, since HP decided pull documentation and drivers for just about all their old systems (including the Vectras, Omnibooks, 9000/Visualize, etc.). I also had to figure out how to get the Vibra 16 working, as I was getting errors till I started loading the one PNP program. DOS games/demos run great, however I'm considering upgrading the GPU to something like a Rage 128 or TNT2 to get higher desktop resolutions. TM Crusoe Posts: 618 Location: Hull, UK | Well, I tried to get a video out today. Instant copyright claim, could dispute on the basis of "educational" purposes but it looks like more editing, more rendering and more uploading. Damn it! Otherwise, a day filled with tedium much like the video project was. Nothing hard, nothing really bad, just a bunch of small inconveniences that annoy far more than real problems. Unfortunately now, I'm out of the ability to put things on VHS and don't think I have any worth using that wouldn't be claimed, I'll dig around, perhaps the Windows 98 demo tape is in better shape than I remember. Can't use the Sega one (Claimed) and know the Cyberian video is in a shit state, I don't have the ICS tape as those were only loaned from my course many years ago, you had to give them back (along with the toolkit and everything) at the end of the course.
