Location: USA | Which Matrox flavor are you going with?
Matrox is the only company that I am aware of that has continued to manufacture AGP graphics cards all these years, although I think that is ending this year. Sure there are a couple fly by Chinese companies making AGP FX5500 cards on ebay, but they are not companies that have been around for decades, plus I am not really sure those aren't NOS generic cards that a company like Jaton would have sold.
3D Printer assembly is proceeding. The "Installation" manual, which is really the assembly manual, is... ok but could use a lot of improvement. 3D illustrations are nice, but hard to tell for sure which hole to stick the screws into sometimes  and since there is no hair around the holes, I am having to educated guess my way around on a few things. The How to Assemble video on the memory card is nothing more than 2:32 of a video staring at the wall with a sign in Chinese and the only english word is 3D in the middle of it all. WTF moment there. So ya it is going slowly. Seems like a nice, well made kit other than the "installation" manual being difficult. One thing that might be an issue, possibly 2 actually, is a couple of the stepper motors use some spring couplers to attach to the rods, but the manual says nothing about how far up or down the motor shaft the couple should be placed. The other thing that might be an issue is there is a sensor for the auto leveling, and I can see that needing adjusted as well. Problem is there, the nuts holding the sensor on, are right up against the cooling fan for the extruder, so adjusting the sensor is going to be... fun... to say the least, if it needs to be shifted a bit. Won't know till I get farther into assembly. |

| Been playing with Retro-Orange-PI today... Found out how it is working, when playing old Sega and Nintendo games.
Mame is for tomorrow to get going. I even replaced the background music on my Retro OrangePI.
Instead of playing old game tunes. It is now playing Africa by Toto. Well... Just delete the original OGG files,
and add new stuff of you'r own choice. Looked at the PY file, and it will search for MP3's too.
Perhaps it is possible to use MP3 instead or use OGG and MP3 at the same time. A job for tomorrow. |

Location: Hull, UK | @WaybackTech; The Matrox? Likely a G200, but if it's gone when I come back to it, I'll have to settle for a G400... Don't really want a G400 as much, but it will work well enough. Who knows, the SDR Rage IIC might actually work well enough and I don't have to get another card, but I doubt this is likely and I need DirectDraw 6 really, something the Rage IIC doesn't do.
I think Matrox still did regular PCI cards as well as AGP, at least until recently, haven't checked for a while.
Good ol' China quality. You know I'd almost be disappointed if these things did fit together properly and easily out of the box.
@Brostenen; Africa? Oh, god... well, at least it's not Belinda Carlisle or something (makes not to hide record collection).

LBA 2 is here, but have had no time to test it. Hoping to give it a quick go before I have to sleep in about half an hour.
Edit: It works! But the Mach64 I have in the K5 is very slow here as it has been elsewhere. I actually played this game on a Mach64 when it came out on a machine of similar speed to the K5, so I don't actually think it's to blame. I've had nVidia cards where using the newer drivers makes them painfully slow - even up to the GTX460, a problem I had when I wanted to record Mirror's Edge - and I'd not be surprised to find the same applies to ATI cards. I will try to find some much older drivers and try them out, but if it doesn't work as well as I want, I still have the Virge from before and I'm not going to have gripes about using it. I used the Mach64 for variety as well as the fact its intended machine was never going to happen, but I prefer function above all else and I like Virge cards anyway. I've lost the memory upgrade chips for it though, so I'll have to get more if I go back to that, shouldn't be too hard, might even have a couple of dead cards at the bottom of a box that I can pillage them from.
Or, I could give up and splash out on an ET6000... Not likely though. Maybe a Cirrus? Not sure. Probably just stick with the Virge if this ATI doesn't work out as they've always worked for me.

| Wayback, I know someone who assembled the exact same kit and the extruder fan air director piece absolutely did not fit into the final design.
Case arrived today and is one of the fantastic examples of fat late 90s computer cases that are multi-form factor compatible: baby AT, AT, ATX, EATX, WTX, Xeon???. I really appreciate this case. I installed the 233MHz PCChips board and everything is nearly ready to go except the case is so large the IDE and floppy disk cables can't quite reach. |

Well... The reason for Africa are simple. It was the first on the 80's mp3 compilation cd that I made back in 2008, when I was beginning to look for stuff for an Mame Arcade Cab. There are plenty of different songs on that cd, so it will be one in many songs when I have tested everything through, and build my own version of an NES-Mini console. Or should I say an 8/16 bit diy-retro-replica-console. If I can borrow some kind of workshop for a couple of days, the plan is to make the case and all that. Yet I have not really come further than getting to know what will be the internals of it. Still researching and digging through eBay for possible different hardware solutions on smaller parts.
ET-6000 you say... Hmmm... I don't like the 6K as such. It is not really that awesomme, and I can't feel but thinking that it is all about brand name in this case, that would make someone want to use it. Cirrus Logic 5422/28/29/46 are way better cards. That goes for ISA/VLB/PCI editions of those cards. True the 6K is a fast card, yet it feels bland, and it is not that compatible in Dos. As to why I have set mine up for sale at a low price, because I have soldered on it in order to fix it. And because of that incompatibility in Dos. Recieved it broken and got it working again some time ago.
Again... Shure it might be compatible for like 80% of all Dos titles. Though if one have access to something like S3's and CL's. Then they should avoid the ET-6000 all together. Shure the ET-4000 are better, as it is a bit more compatible than the ET-6000. Still not perfect though. |

I've got a pile of G200's. Radeon 7500 would be plenty for a PII-450, although I have never ran one in dual monitor so IDK how well they look.

I disagree very strongly, ET6000 kicks the crap out of the cards you mention both in benchmarks and image quality, though mine is a Hercules Dynamite 128 and Hercules were usually pretty good back then. Works perfectly fine for DOS. Never had a problem with it. Never had the pleasure of using a ET-6100 though, but would love to play with the Apocalypse 5D sonic card though if it wasn't so damn expensive. ATI Mach 32 VLB is a pretty good card. Western Digital VLB/PCI cards, such as the Paradise are really good as well, in fact they are probably right there with the ET4000 at least. Weitek Power 9000 based Diamond Viper VLB or PCI versions, 9000/9100 might be worth looking into but I have not tried a Weitek based card before so I have no idea where they lay on the performance scale, but usually chips Diamond used for their Viper line were pretty powerful.
Well, it is starting to look like a 3D printer. This kit is the Tronxy 802MA which has the auto bed leveling stuff. Again, no mention of how far out the bracket at the end of the threaded rods is supposed to be, so I just went by what felt right. I will probably have it finished up pretty soon.

For cards, I personally go for compatibility as the primaery thing. If I have a card that are so-so in speed and 100% compatible in MS-Dos 6.22, I tend to go with that. Even if the 98% compatible card is twice as fast as the compatible one. Compatibility beats everything else in my book. Second I go for those cards, that has the least or none spaghetti lines (vertical white lines) on a LCD/TFT monitor. CRT does not have those issues. Yet having a woman that gets migrane from CRT noise and a few other high pitch noise sources. I can not use any CRT's in the household. So yeah... I can only use a few select ISA/VLB/PCI cards for P1's and down.
Hmmm... Then it surprises me, that no one has declared interrest for it on Amibay. Though it is not in mint condition at all, it is however working. I got it in a non working state, and managed to resurrect it. And looking at what they are for sale on eBay for, then I guess it is a fair price. I just think that over 250 euro is nuts, even for a mint condition, so I have put it up for sale at 23 euro, explaining in detail what I have done to resurrect it and what cosmetic issues there is. Guess people are only looking for mint condition stuff. Anyway... Not going to sell here, only explaining what I think about prices. Yeahhh... Some times eBay sucks.

Regarding the RetrOrangePI gaming setup that I have been messing around with lately. Well.... As I am a Linux user on the desktop (have been full time the last 3 to 4 months, on and off the last 20 years), I can just take the SD Card and put it in my laptop, to transfer data. So much more easy to do it this way, instead of the network and USB devices. (I can forget all about network setup on the PI) And for the background music, it actually play MP3's way better than OGG files. Loads them faster and for some bizarre reason, the whole experience seems to go a bit more smooth. If it is indeed the file format I do not know. It could be the number of files that are the source, because I have only tested it out with some 8 songs in all. Things are lightening up, and I am allmost at home in the textbased configuration tool.
Now I need to get it going on my other PI board, as it is faster, has 2gb ram instead of one and has eMMC storage plus SATA port. If I can find the line, that dictates were the rom files are stored, I might be able to point it to an 2.5 inch 160gb SATA platter drive that I have. Who knows... It might work.

@Brostenen; I remembered you saying so which was part of the reason for my "Nah!" because I'm trying to avoid things like that in the first place. Regardless of how it performs, I don't think it would be an appropriate card for this system anyway. I also said, functionality is my main priority, so I have a couple of drivers to try and have decided that if they don't work, I'll grab some new memory chips and go back to the Virge. The Virge did not fail me once, so I don't think it would now. One factor that is on my side here, I'm using CRTs only. I operate only a single LCD display and its sole purposes are to show me Audacity when I'm in a video window, and also to preview Vegas projects so I know how they'll look to everyone else.
Linux? I still haven't gotten over trying to snoop that parallel port protection stuff for Shadow Warrior. What a headache and proved fruitless, ended up falling back on DOS as usual.
@WaybackTech; As is evident by this thread, I've heard of conflicting results with ET6000 cards and have no reason to doubt either way. As such I do have to wonder if you're on the right track and perhaps they are very vendor or maybe card configuration specific somehow. I mean, I have that Trio32 that outruns every other Trio32 and even Trio64 I have tested, for reasons unknown. Either way, I'm not likely to find out, as stated above, I'll try some drivers I have and if they don't work out, it's back to the Virge. This would leave me running no ATI cards, but I figured this isn't permanent as the K6 is supposed to have one and I'm sure I'll give in and build one that works eventually.
One surprise I did find was the TGUI-9440-1, it's not as quick or anything, but damn is it close. Tested with 1MB of memory only and yeah, not all that far behind a Trio64 and the Windows GUI is still smooth at 800x600 too. It's not a candidate for the K5, but I'd have no gripes using one elsewhere at a later time. These are Pine cards, specifically PT-540.

| Yeah... The Hercules Dynamite 128 that I have, makes horrible spaghetti lines in games such as Dynablaster, Civilization and Lotus-III. Even that VGA compatibility dos chart out there, say that ET6000 is a semi compatible card. In Doom and Duke3d it is a totally different story. In those games it just shines big time. No matter what. The VGA signal strength is just as strong as an Matrox G400 or my Number9 Virge325. On my CL-5446-PCI, S3-Trio64v+ PCI and S3-Virge325-PCI cards, it is a different story. They just play everything I throw at them without any issues. Even my S3-805-VLB makes a better image quality with near no spaghetti lines at all. They are nearly invissible, yet they are there. The same with my ET4000 ISA (eax? something like that, not w or that kind). My monitor is an Samsung Syncmaster 172v.

The everyday stuff in other words. Heck... I even use Linux on my phone in the form of Android. Yet for retro/vintage hobby, it is all MS-Dos 6.22 and Win98se, except the few times I play with Os/2 and BeOS. Even when I need a temporary file server, I tend to use Ubuntu server and set it all up in the command line and Midnight Commander. |

Location: USA | I stand corrected, my ET6000 is the STB Lightspeed 128, although, I am pretty sure the Dynamite 128 is the same card, or at least manufactured by STB.
I like the Trident 9440 VLB card I have, though it can be outpaced in benchmarks by the ET4000 pretty quickly, still though for a 486, it works well. My ET4000 VLB cards all perform differently. I have a 9440-1 and a 9440-3 PCI cards but I never really thought much of them, other than they usually work well and I think they would be fine for a Pentium class up to maybe 133Mhz. But the S3 Virge DX/GX cards are usually cheap and easy to find, so I usually chose one of those over the Tridents for PCI cards. Cirrus and S3 chips are good workhorses. I am not sure I have ever seen one die, even when there is rust I/O shield and VGA port is funky looking due to weathering, one of the the Trio 64's I have still works as if it wasn't subjected to being outside for a period of time. |

Trying to work on things, but the weather has been too hot - it was over 32 degrees in here - developed a blinding headache and have generally been out of action. Otherwise, the basic ingredients of the burner video are there and the PPro is approaching a point where I'll be ready to do something with it, the burner video has indeed proved effective so far in removing the demotivation I faced after the K6.
Also, I have decided that I will replace the Mach64. I suspect it's just the card I'm using or perhaps it hates my motherboard for some reason, I don't have another one so I will indeed be returning to a Virge 325.
Currently waiting for my headache to go away. I get them often, they're genuinely blinding and sometimes they hurt so badly that I nearly pass out, they're likely inherited as it seems to run in the family. No point trying to do anything when they're bad as I can't focus and will probably mess things up.
In other news, I might be playing my synth in public either next week or the week after, been somewhere full of puny one-man-and-his-guitar types and I want to mobilize a synth rig and annoy them with ballads or something. |

Location: UK | Yep, this last week has been a trial for heat. I work in a small local garage as a MOT tester, we have a tin roof and what with the cars running for the cat test etc it's been bloody HOT! I must have sweated off a stone! Don't even get me started on the bloody diesels!
Thankfully it has cooled off today, at least here in Devon, hoping to actually get a comfy sleep tonight. At least I only had to work in the morning today.
In computer related news, I went to upgrade the RAM in my IBM Personal computer 430(Pentium 133, SiS chipset), went through my bag of 72 pin sims and found the best I had was just 1 more 8MB to give a total of 24MB, it kinda felt like being back in the 90's! 
My 3 486 CPU's also arrived, a intel DX 33, and AMD DX 40 and SX/2 66, sadly a pin was broken clean off the SX/2  It's the(A16) INT pin too so that's the end of that CPU I guess.
The other two are fine thankfully.
Also got a AMD 5x86 X5 ADZ coming my way from amibay, I doubt it's better than my trusty Cyrix 586 100 but this stuff seems to be getting harder and more expensive to buy every day, so get it while you can I guess.
I'd like to build an early ISA 486 system, but finding a I/O card is the main obstacle for that at the moment, motherboards are not to bad to find, already have CPU's, ISA VGA's and period correct hard disks(Fujitsu 40mb and conner 170 & 500), those ISA multi I/O boards seem to be very elusive tho.

| I can't believe I got the 233MHz MMX build correct on my first attempt, and first try. Powered right up with the BIOS recognizing the 512K external cache module, 233MHz MMX, and the SDRAM. I spent literal hours scouring the internet for what little remains of the manual to configure the jumpers and my hard work paid off. The only problem is that the CMOS battery is dead (which I expected).
The case doesn't seem to like the AT power supply dimensions so its kinda taped in there with electrical tape but I couldn't give less of a fuck. |

Actually pretty cheap, considering that it is an official Amiga mouse. Nope. Not commodore, yet Amiga Technologies model.
Wich still makes it retro on the brink to vintage. (1994/95'ish) On the other hand, it is NOS and 400dpi. Seller is in the UK. |

Yeah, it's been the same recently. The heat, my headaches and extreme toothache makes for an awful combination, usually draining my motivation and making my days shorter.
Not much has been going on recently, for me. Got a PCI sata card in the mail, a really cheap realtek raid card that I paid £2.50 for. Threw it into my K7 and it works well enough for extra storage in there, though is sadly not bootable.
Main PC is still having a ton of issues, so I've not been able to use my capture card sadly. I think it is this motherboard failing (tried multiple power supplies with stable 5v rails) and I'm considering just selling the mobo+cpu+ram on as a bundle, to buy some used Xeon HP workstation, or something. ASRock motherboards fucking suck |

Haha, good old mismatched RAM. If the missing CPU pin is on the outer rows you might be able to cut a paperclip, or similar wire, and bend it over to prevent it falling into the socket and have it make contact with the gold pad where the pin was, assuming the pad hasn't come off too.
There has never been a complete decision on whether AMD or Cyrix were better when it comes to the 5x86, their performance differs in places such that they average out about the same, but you might notice if you regularly run a task that they excel/lack with.
My secondary web server (currently offline with its project incomplete) is an ISA-Only 486, but it has the unusual trait of onboard IO. Those cards seem to show up on eBay quite regularly, but the prices vary widely - sometimes they're cheap, sometimes the seller is just barmy and wants £150 for a cheap nasty thing.
@486u; Excellent! You can do a lot with a good 233MMX. Not sure what to say about the PSU, but if it ain't bothering you then there's probably little point in doing anything about it.
@Brostenen; Funny, I just bought some new mice. For some reason my PS/2 mice won't work with serial adapters anymore - no idea why, as they were models that did work before and I used them, with the same adapters, for years, then one day they stopped working that way. I'd post pictures but they're not that interesting, except perhaps the Genius GM-6 - this one's not mine, but here. Mine might be following me on an outing soon, namely to control the T3200SX faster if I go through with my plans to upstage the whiny guitar men (and likely empty the building) - I shall try to film this if I manage to pull it off. I haven't announced my plan to the people running the thing and I'm not sure they'll be too happy about it.
@RobW0lf; I had toothache, used to wake up coughing bits of tooth up. Eventually the tooth died and it doesn't hurt, but I should probably have the remains pulled out before it does something bad, given there's a hole into my gum where it was. Strange though how it was by far the whitest and most healthy looking tooth I had, even the dentist said so. I'm guessing there's no BIOS on this SATA card and that you can't fiddle with things in that? Also, the system BIOS has to be set to "SCSI" to boot from most any card like that - you most likely know this already, but in case someone doesn't, well, there.
Yes, Xeon systems are good. Still loving my E3, not a single problem with it or the X10SAE board I'm using it with and I think the uptime is several months long now.

| I have intense aches from an impacted tooth that I used to, and still can, get opiates for if I wanted to that's how intense they are. I prefer to go the organic healthy route and smoke pot and it really does help. |

Location: USA | @RobW0lf I can't really say too many bad things about the HP Z600 I had. Somewhat limited though in what Xeon's would run in it because of the power supply, and watch out because there are 3 motherboard revisions and only the last one will support dual 5600 series, so if you look into those HP boxes, try to get one with dual 5600's already installed, even if they are the slowest model, plus you won't have to by a second hsf, unless you don't care about dual processor. Probably would recommend instead the Z800, but they had the similar changes with the motherboards. Those Z series boxes are very well built. HP really did a good job on those. Too bad the number of them I see with cases scratched to hell is quite large, but those tend to also be cheaper. I know people like the Lenovo Xeon boxes as well and those can be had for pretty cheap as well.
@HT - Been awhile since Mullet Man was set lose on the town.

Location: Hull, UK | My Floppy Emulators have arrived, no buttons, no segmented display... err... the hell am I meant to do with these? The software only works under Windows 2000 up, but by then I can emulate a drive for free in software. They were cheap enough that it costs more to try returning them, so I guess they'll do as bay covers or for propping things up if nothing else, but I'm not happy. |

Yeah.... It is pretty efficient that stuff, and I would allways recommend it over morphine products to people. For me it would not help, as I get sick from that stuff, instead of getting high. True... I don't get high. I wommit instead. |

Right now, though, I'm 100% under the influence of nothing but good old "my internet doesn't work properly" because my uploads keep failing. I am never, ever, doing another series in HD after Mirror's Edge, although the main channel will remain in 720p. Whilst waiting for this, I've tried to get back to work on my book and I've also been learning a few songs for when I mobilize the keyboard. |

| Well.... For the last couple of days, I have been deep buried in my Amiga600. First up, it is really in need of a recap, so I have been hunting down a professional repair man that has been fixing tv's, radio's and computers since the 70's. I have seen his work before, and he can fix a broken pin on a simcard slot on a smartphone. Yeah... It's microsim slots we are talking about here, so he is absolutely great. He can recap for aprox 76 US Dollars. Plus/minus 10.
Secondly... I have set my linux machine up, so it will take any USB storage as a harddrive, when I am running FS-UAE. This way I can make an Amiga harddrive installation on Linux. Sweet... Then transfer the adf2disk tool onto the harddrive, and fill it up with ADF files from the pc. Yeah... I can attach a folder in FS-UAE, as a harddrive, and just copy from one drive to another. In short... Copy the content of a folder on Linux, onto another folder on the Amiga formatted CF card or harddrive, that are attached to a USB dongle. I must admit that this is a really awesomme way to recreate amiga floppy's. (workbench installation disks or games)
Then I have cleaned up the Amiga, the plastic was washed in ordinaery dishwasher soap (the fluid kind for doing dishes by hand) and the RF shield was cleaned up from rust stains, using those small steel-whool pads that comes with soap in them.
I have also bought a couple of upgrades for the A600 machine. Kickrom 37.350, CF-IDE adaptor, new rubber feets and so on. Not much, just enough to get this back to stock configuration with a modern hint. I have even discovered that it is a big myth, that kickrom 37.300 only supports up to 40mb harddrives. As I have had a 1gb IBM 2.5 inch 44pin PATA drive attached and running Workbench 2.04.
Finally... I bought a new system board/mainboard/motherboard-whatever it is called. For my C64 machine. The old one was too badly damaged, as a lot of solderpads lifted, when I tried to desolder them old dead chips. New board it was then. The last thing I have done, is to dig through my old stash of Amiga software, that I have not touched for the last 11 to 12 years or so. Found 210+ games, that I am going to copy to the Amiga CF card. This way I can just write a new copy whenever I want to play something else. CF cards are cool, though an amiga are not really the same, if I use some gotek for floppy emulation. Need that hard and loud floppy drive sound and ticks. :-P

I know it is in need of a recap, because it has one of them annoying issues. When using the RGB to Scart cable, it will show a blueish color all over the first 10 to 15 minutes when turned on. Then it will show a beautifull screen without any bad picture untill I turn it off. The other thing is, that when I use a harddrive or use the RGB port, the sound will be horrible. When using the composit out, the image is flawless (as good as composit can be) and the sound is flawless too. So yeah... In dire need of a recap it is. When the recap is done, I will probably save up for some good upgrades.
I am thinking that it need at least one extra megabyte of memory, or probably upgrade to 020 CPU running some 18mhz. And I am going to get a scandoubler, in order to be able to use a VGA monitor. The accelerator will cost some 150 euro. The scandoubler some 99 euro and the memupgrade goes for some 36 to 39 euro. Not cheap. First I need to see if a recap can bring it back to good operating state. If succesfull, I will have a decent ECS/OCS gaming machine for them 1987 to 1992 Amiga games. And looking at me bringing back the C64 from the grave and having them 486/Pentium1 rigs. I guess I have nearly all what is needed for software between 1985 and 1996. Not bad... Not bad... Write stuff, game or do something else... C64/Amiga/PC... Lots of choices. Love it.

| You still need an MSX2 and a Famicom w/ DD. The MSX is critical because it was, at one point, the *only* popular 8-bit machine available in much of the non-anglo world. Lot of fantastic Japanese developers got their start developing for the MSX too.
