Rise MP6 Posts: 263 | Seems to be a trend for the big firms to drop old drivers, for what reason? Forced obsolescence, I blame apple.

TM Crusoe Posts: 618 Location: Hull, UK | Probably. It's funny how this came up with someone I talked to a few days back - why do they all want to copy Apple, when Apple have such a small share of the market? Why not copy HP or even Lenovo instead... at least, until they started doing it as well, as otherwise, they evidently have a much more successful and marketable device. It's akin to why I've never understood why all the FPS games copied Quake, yet none copied Duke despite Duke3D selling substantially more copies back then. Edited by DXZeff 2021-06-10 10:49 PM

Rise MP6 Posts: 263 | The biggest pisser, is the soldered to the board ram trend the fuckers started. Then all the other shits jumped on the band waggon, with hardware whitelists and other crap. With games, it's just the same. It's often the inferior item that gets pushed. A triumph of quality marketing over a quality product.

Rise MP6 Posts: 263 | Aye, we need a revolution! I know I post about liking Thinkpads. I like the way some of them are built, is all. The only reason I got a T430 recently, is because some bright spark cracked the bios. Otherwise, they could shove it. "No you can't fit a faster wifi card - it's not on our whitelist". Such practices should be illegal and it shows how corrupt "consumer protection" laws really are!

TM Crusoe Posts: 671 | tedster - 2021-06-17 5:51 AM Ping's a bit shit, speed's pretty good. Looks awesomme to me. As for me. Just paid for a Corsair Carbid 540 case. It is the version that are black with red grill. I have bought it for my ATX-64 build, because it has two 3.5 inch drive bay's on the front. That way I can install push buttons for a PI-1541 and have the cartridge slot routed to the front.

TM Crusoe Posts: 618 Location: Hull, UK | Fixed for now, but it'll probably be off again for an indefinite amount of time while I try to figure out some way to image the hard drives, as they still haven't been replaced and have been throwing constant errors for over a year now.

TM Crusoe Posts: 671 | tedster - 2021-06-18 3:58 PM Yay! Zeff fixed the forum, well done! Oh, I like those cases, cube style with good air flow. Should be nice! I'd dearly love a large HDD but the prices are still insane. I was wondering why the forum was off-line, but remembered that DXZeff are running on a budget and likes to wear out hardware. And that is ok with me. Actually pretty awesomme, because this is one of the cases were it is good. It is not for profit, and thus we can experience old days, were stuff are not always up and running. And it is great, because we need to be reminded how it is to have patience in these days of everything just working. Most of all, it is good that stuff are used untill it dies, because of all this enviromental stuff that we have become aware of the last 50 years or so. My hats off to DXZeff on these points. I guess I was lucky. I bought it for 200 Kroners. (That is some 26 Euro) And yes, there are a few scufs and scratches here and there. But nothing too serious. The seller got it from a flea market and so he decided to sell at a low price. My bet is that he made some 100 percent on it, and sold it to me for double the price he paid. None the less, I am happy with it. It is modded slightly. The plates with holes in them, have been given a red colour. And the Corsair case badge have been replaced with a Noctua badge/logo. A few tabs inside are broken, but they are the ones on the 2.5 inch drive caddies. That can be fixed with a few drops of super glue. But yeah.... This case fits the bill perfect, of keeping to the UNI64's mantra of modernising the Commodore64 as a platform. It has the best of old school in a modern package. And not too much bling-bling. That is why I like it. I am thinking about getting one more, when I need to build a modern workstation in the future. That however will be with the 200-something model. Because it have the same features, yet no front drive bays and it is a micro-ATX case instead. Anyway... Picked it up yesterday. EDIT: The more I look at it, the more it reminds me as if a VAX system and a Cray-II had a lovechild, who became a goth or something like that. The more I look at it, the more I like it. TM Crusoe Posts: 618 Location: Hull, UK | Of course it then turned out that one of the replacement hard drives died also. I'm going to order more, but can't get them here until Saturday at the earliest and also can't guarantee they'll be any better, so these boards might be up and down like a prostitute's panties for a while. Also keep in mind that anything posted prior to being properly fixed might vanish if the only remaining drive goes out. The last backup is from the 21st.

Rise MP6 Posts: 263 | Case looks good! Case looks huge! Nice one for keeping the forums going Zeff, if you need a drive, maybe one from my hoard will tide you over? Let me know what you need and if I have one, I'll stick it in the post.

TM Crusoe Posts: 671 | #DXZeff Well... No worries, we have already stored most of it in our own memory on the top-floor.... :-) #Tedster Thanks... Yup, that case is huge... Like it is a dwarf monolith or something. And I love it. As for today.... Finished up the riser cards on my ATX-64 build. The only solder job left, is the Cartridge port connector. And correct any solder mistakes that I might have done. The next task is to check if I have bridged any legs on every single socket, check if there is continuity between all Volt inputs and check every single ground connections. Once that is done, I will power it on and check if every single voltages are correct throughout the machine. And then finally I can insert chips and run deadtest cartridge on it. I have also swapped the jumpers with fresh unused ones. I have gone with red for all SID setting jumpers and green for VIC-II setting jumpers. TM Crusoe Posts: 671 | Also... I dug out the Album I created in 2001. It is only 5 tracks long. The reason for it, was to profe that it is possible to create an album in less than 24 hours and sit with a master copy. That all without having any knowledge on how to create music. No education, no nothing. And yes. I did it in less than 24 hours. Well. I did it, listened to it and put it aside for 20 years. Rather fun to hear what I did back then. 20 years aniversary of the "Diss'gus-Dingo" album. (Yes, yes, play on words) Edited by Brostenen 2021-06-24 11:17 PM

TM Crusoe Posts: 618 Location: Hull, UK | An album? Now I kinda wanna hear it. Sometimes, doing things quickly is best for certain types of music. I've found that using first take vocals, despite them being worse, works better for sarcastic and crude songs. To that end, I can't remember if I ever posted my full, horrid album here; http://dxzeff.com/trash/album Vocals, music and drawings are all pretty much the first take, because it was supposed to be kinda shit. The drawing where he smashes a painting over his knee in "Buggy", I always thought, was the best example, where it's really bad, but it kinda 'conveys the anger' of that particular moment and wouldn't seem quite so genuine if drawn again. But now I sound like my old hippie art teacher who used to start getting moist when I'd glue trash to a cutout of cardboard box and tell her some bullshit story, about it being a 'statement that speaks of our disposable society' and 'the apathy felt in the world by the people therein' or something to that effect. I will admit, however, that the last vocals in "Fuck your sister" took a few takes, because that song has over two octaves of range, which my voice really, really doesn't have. It hurt to sing that. Voice sounded off for at least a week after doing it. Curiously, a really old friend occasionally filled in the artist field of his stuff with "Dingus Dingo" when he didn't want people to know they were his, though he claimed to have stolen this from somewhere rather than inventing it himself. TM Crusoe Posts: 671 | Ohhh.... She would have loved my brothers piece of art. He found bones from 3 or 4 different animals in the forest, and put them together as a skeleton of a strange animal. Using metal wires. Hung it up from the sealing and called it "Bones and death". Regarding the album. Then I am all in for letting people hear it for free. However I will much like to keep the copy rights for it, just in case some ducebag explits it for cold hard cash. If you know a somewere, a database or anything, that I can upload it to and keep the rights. The idea is to keep copyright, but I will only come after those that exploit it for money. People who just copy in order to listen, are something that I would not bother with. It is without any singing. All electronic. Edited by Brostenen 2021-06-26 8:26 PM

Well... I don't think that he "stole" it from me. I have never made it public, and the only English person that I knew back in 2001 was Mick Aston. He was on Time Team back, and sadly dead now. Well... I had not spoken with him since around 1990 or something. My father had him as a mentor, when my father took his education as a Geography and History teacher in the late 1960's to early 1970's. I just remember asking Mick about his Roman skull's that he had in his garden shed. And yes, true enough, three beautifull Roman skull's perfectly on display on the top shelf, above the weed wacker.

TM Crusoe Posts: 671 | Yesterday I measured continuity on all sockets. Everything checked ok. And today I reached a milestone with my ATX64. No bridged sockets, and then I powered it on for the first time. All voltages are perfect. I checked for 12 and 9 volt on SID (old and new SID) plus 12 and 5 volt on VIC-II (old and new VIC-II). Both VIC-II and dual SID turned out perfect. powered off, inserted all logic chips and went over the board again. All voltages are perfect and spot on. Happy to report, that the build is done (soldering wise), well, nearly... Except for the cartridge slot connector. Still need to source it, so I can run deadtest on the machine. No solder mistakes so far. Edited by Brostenen 2021-06-30 10:28 AM (ATX64-Voltages-All-OK.jpg) Attachments ---------------- ATX64-Voltages-All-OK.jpg (671KB - 269 downloads)

Rise MP6 Posts: 263 | Finally managed to get a large HDD for my NAS. I've got 5 x 3TB WD Red drives in it at the moment. Some of them have over 65,000 hours on them! I'll retire all of those and swap them for a single drive. I got one of those WD Elements 12TB. They have White label drives in them, which are WD Reds, really. They call it "shucking" the drive. It's insane, that it's a third of the cost of buying a bare OEM drive on its own!

TM Crusoe Posts: 671 | Indeed.... Good that it is up again. I have bought some chips. - 2 x MOS 6526 CIA chips. - 1 x MOS 6569R5 VIC-II chip. - 1 x MOS 8500 CPU. - 1 x AT28c256 eeprom. I bought the R5 specifically because it is the absolute best VIC-II that was ever created. And the 8500, because it is the version of the 6510 CPU, that are produced in a more modern way and thus produce less heat. Also. I have begun editing the C64 kernal rom, in order to have a different screen after powering on my ATX64 system. Doing it in a HEX editor on Linux. Edited by Brostenen 2021-07-03 9:12 AM
