Rise MP6 Posts: 263 | Lightning strike yesterday AM came down the phone line and took out the lan ports on my router, along with two of my 8 port switches. Great!

TM Crusoe Posts: 618 Location: Hull, UK | I'm prone to running around pulling cords out of the wall when storms happen, at least now I can tell people my paranoia isn't misguided, but it sucks that your gear got hit. The new 286 is working, though isn't complete as I need to take it outside and hose it all down, get rid of that battery acid and clean the case up. I also managed to get the Thunder Board to work, but only had enough caps to make it output sound, the ones on the output side are still the trash they used to 'professionally refurbish' the card. Also their dumb ill-fitting volume pot acts as a mic, maybe due to not being grounded. Still, it does work now where before the system couldn't see it, so this should be a trivial repair once I have the money to burn. Discovered my IDE cables were dodgy, both of the ones I tried, and that's why the drive wasn't playing ball. Also got XT-IDE to appear (though it still did nothing but appear and exit) by filling the first half of the ROM with zeroes, offsetting it by 800h from where it was, then setting the ROM address back 800h - meaning it was at the same address it was before. Couldn't tell you why this works, but it didn't detect anything and I don't need it anyway, so whatever. You know, it might help if someone wrote real documentation for the damn XT-IDE bios, instead of whatever that trash is they're claiming is documentation. Quick benchmarks and such suggest that the system does perform properly, games and applications also work so far, the only thing that's thrown a fit is ID games having display problems, but problems with ID shite is a given so I'm not going to chase it down. Will need to get network functionality going at some point, but that shouldn't be too bad. Otherwise, I issued some fixes to a Duke3D level I released quite a while ago now; https://forums.duke4.net/topic/10697-release-dimension-shift/page__v... Edited by DXZeff 2020-06-28 3:05 AM

Rise MP6 Posts: 263 | Aye, well BT are sending me a new router thing. So at least that's one less expense. I do have those anti-surge sockets on the power side. Along with a UPS for my NAS. The router got its power from that too but it came down the phone line and jumped to the LAN circuit from the shitty BT router as its shortest path to ground. Ho hum, at least no computers got fried. Good news with your 286 then, I'm using automotive brake parts cleaner nowadays, when I don't just chuck stuff in the dishwasher!

TM Crusoe Posts: 671 | Last day before I can finally move in. As a big thanks to all, I will be making "Bøf Sandwich" for dinner for all. Roughly translated, then it will be "Beef Sandwich-Burger" in English. It is an old Danish version of the burger, in were it is a combination of minced beef paddy meal (soft onions, gravy and potatoes kind of thing). It is basically a standard burger without the salad. (just the bun and the beef paddy/burger-beef) Then it have pickeled red beet's, crispy roasted onions, raw onions, pickeled cucumber slices, Danish remoulade-dressing, tomato ketchup and a butt-load og brown gravy all over it. The gravy have to cover everything, else it is porly serving. :-D It will be awesome to thank them all with a good solid meal tonight.

TM Crusoe Posts: 618 Location: Hull, UK | Purely because I felt like it, I decided to take a shit Chinese tricycle and attach a diesel engine to it. 3HP 212cc diesel, a cheap China clone of a 1970s Yanmar. The drive system is a simple centrifugal clutch, jackshaft and a sprocket with a rag joint on the wheel. Torque converters are costly, especially if you can find the needed weights and springs to make them engage at the lower RPMs of a diesel. Centrifugal clutches give a rougher ride, as well as less fine control over speed, but they're cheap and simple, so the likely failure of this part is less of a concern. This was its first run, it was built for torque and not speed, but should top out at around 25MPH. I can't really open it up much yet, though, as the handlebars suck and are jabbing me in the ribs long before turning starts to happen, so they need to be replaced, I was also running a slicker front tire in this test. I have ridden it since with a fatter tire and it improved steering, but I still need to change to riser bars or something. Now I know it works, I don't mind putting the time in to do this, plus I need to make up some mudguards and paint things.

TM Crusoe Posts: 618 Location: Hull, UK | DNS is claiming I haven't paid, but I'm not with them any more and could swear I have paid. If the site disappears, that's why and I'll fix it as soon as possible, it wouldn't be the first time they'd done something like this to try and get money out of me and every time I've ignored it, they've continued the service like nothing happened. I repaired these cards; Unfortunately some idiot 'professionally refurbished' it with completely the wrong caps and it didn't work, I don't know if the values I have used are correct as I pretty much had to go with my instincts. FM output is muddy; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2PQLWZwjzww MIO card with a weird BIOS on it, not sure how useful this will be, because said BIOS is shit. edneil donated a hard drive for the 6MHz 286. Will probably have to find a better replacement later, but I can't risk losing a booting hard drive in the system due to how it works and having no other way to boot said system.

TM Crusoe Posts: 618 Location: Hull, UK | Bought a dead 386 to repair my older 6MHz 286, as it was cheaper than buying parts; Served its purpose. The machine itself mostly works (like I say, always buy broken, because if you buy working it won't work) but it has a totally retarded BIOS that doesn't let you tamper with vital parameters, boots from floppy B until you define a hard drive and then only boots fixed disks, and doesn't let you initiate boots from ROMs because it thinks you're running an OS in ROM and doesn't allow that. Can't see it being around long, but as it's a 16MHz system from 1988, it should make a fun comparison to the similarly aged 16MHz 286, in that I can fully demo why the 386 was often not worth the additional cost at that time.

TM Crusoe Posts: 671 | Wrote a small blog entry regarding transferring files directly (no emulation setup) between an Amiga HDD-Filesystem and a Linux-Filesystem. Two console-steps, and opening a folder as root. Is all what is takes to transfer files. Blog Sorry for my bad English. I know it stinks.... TM Crusoe Posts: 618 Location: Hull, UK | How was the house move? Built an extension on my shed, really just a storage closet so I can get my workspace back. May set that little Leo system up out there now I have more space, so I can mess around with it between things.

TM Crusoe Posts: 671 | Started to make a Fileserver/NAS for anything vintage related. Whatever that will be a container for Playstation2 ISO's to load over network or a place to store Amiga/Dos/C64 software and manuals. If I want to, I can store music as well. For this I am using an OrangePI-Plus2 SBC. (OrangePI-Debian.jpg) Attachments ---------------- OrangePI-Debian.jpg (476KB - 374 downloads)

TM Crusoe Posts: 671 | I made some Danish inspired Cornish Pasty. Let's just call them Danish-Pasty-Pie. I used pizza dough and made this minced beef stew, that I stuffed them with. I made sure that the stew is nearly without any sauce. More or less a dry stew, and I used whipping cream, in order to keep the smoothness of the texture intact. This is to prevent them from leaking when being baked. They are for my daughters lunch at school. Ahhh.... The perfect blend of UK and DK food culture. Fit for that mix-culture we have between our great nations. TM Crusoe Posts: 671 | In the process of making backup copies of all my Amiga floppy disks. These are disks from the late 1980's and early 1990's (circa 1987/1992), so I need to preserve the content. For the image backup, I am using an Amiga with HDD and Workbench installed. Running Tracksaver-GUI for the task. So far I am half way through all the disks, only slightly under 300 to go. TM Crusoe Posts: 671 | tedster - 2020-09-04 2:03 AM How are you doing in your new home, settled in ok? Thanks for asking. Yes. I am slowly building myself a new home from scratch. Missing a couple of pictures on the wall and a couple of lamps, then the sofa area will be finished in it's basic form. All the other area's are still missing a lot of work. However everything is usefull for basic living at this moment. I recieved a couple of items over the last couple of weeks. That is a coffe-set, that was my mothers brothers. He died in 1997, and I guess my mother have finished mourning him. It is basically made from porcelain and is white with blue ornaments and gold lining on the edges. And I recieved other funny family stuff. Like the ashtray that my grandmother used for 50 years straight, when she smoked her small cigars. I am smoking outside, so it will not be used anymore. Just a funny little thing with a family history. Plus I recieved the beer opener that my grandfather got as a present, at his 50'th birthday in 1976. The same year I was born. It is ugly, simple yet my son is named after him, so I am guessing that I will give it to my son when I turn 50. Just for the fun of things. :-D As for me..... My home-server is slowly taking form. It is not on the top of my list of to-do stuff, however I have done the PSU compartment. For powering it on, I have chosen a Meanwell 5v 10a PSU to power that lovely OrangePI-Plus2 and an internal SATA HDD. Yup. The OrangePI-Plus2 have a SATA connector on the board, eliminating the need for a SATA-to-USB converter. For building the PSU compartment, I have used cardboard and lots of two-component epoxy glue, hence the extreme glossy finish. (Once finished, the server will indeed be a true custom-build) (Server-PSU-Compartment-01.jpg) (Server-PSU-Compartment-02.jpg) Attachments ---------------- Server-PSU-Compartment-01.jpg (381KB - 376 downloads) Server-PSU-Compartment-02.jpg (355KB - 388 downloads)
