I'd sure call that progress indeed.

Being sick of broken Celery and K8 boards, I decided to order an Atom board for my NAS project instead; http://www.ecs.com.tw/ECSWebSite/Product/Product_Overview/EN/Mother...
Nothing special, but it was cheaper than the parts I'd need to fix either of the other solutions, except maybe the K8, but it'll make that fiver back in electricity savings in no time. It's basically just the single core version of what this server is running on, so it's a fairly safe bet it'll be fine sitting in a corner running FTP/SMB tasks.

Nice choice. I have thought of using an OrangePI Plus 2 or something instead, yet it is not on my top priority at the moment. Need to finish up a lot of projects, so it has been on hold for some time. Now you are saying Samba sharing? Will that be some sort of Unix or Linux that you will be using? If so, then you need to take a look at a browser tool that you install on top of Linux. Like Webmin.

As for me, I have finally got that Thinkpad X220 that my father in law had gotten for free, and he has then given it to me for free. I have tried tons of Linux distributions on it, and so far I like Ubuntu Mate the best. Then problem is that I have not had any luck getting Samba running, in order to share on a Windows network. So far only Kubuntu and Linux Mint have been a success.... Need to see if I can get it going on Ubuntu Mate, else I will see if I can get it going on Xubuntu.

I run Xubuntu 18.04 as a server with SAMBA configured to work with Windows back to 3.11 / DOS.

Hell no, no Linux around here, it'll be running the same stripped down XP installation as the Celery board was. It's fast, it works out of the box (especially with an install script) and requires basically no intervention or third party tools to do its job.

I have however, had much fun over the years. Using Ubuntu-server installed on various hardware. Using the installation as a NAS this way. Just the basic install and SAMBA configured to automatically add a specific set of directories as folder in Windows, whenever you log into Windows using a specific login. Not hard to do, and I get to configure, using remote console. Really fast and nice to do this, as I can just place the server werever I want and have it as a headless setup. Yet since 2016, I have not had any server running. I wanted to save power, so the plan is to use a SBC machine. Namely an Orange PI that has a sata port. I have all, just missing a projects case from China and a silent fan plus find a nice PSU solution. Like a meanwell.

#Waybacktech + DXZeff.
Just a matter of choosing the right tool that works for you and your needs. Hell... Even BSD Unix can be used if that is a personal choice in flavour. It is like the same with fruit salad. One like it with oranges, the other hate oranges in his or hers fruit salad.

Setting up Ubuntu Mate 18.04 on my "new" Thinkpad X220 laptop. So far, I have Samba up and running. And I have updated the installation with stuff like media codecs, flash and Oracle Java. Background images are in place and I am copying the image directory from the Xubuntu installation to the Ubuntu Mate installation as of now. The terminal is set up as well, and the Linux version of Etcher is installed as well. Oh boy, the X220 is fast, and I only have 8gb of Ram on it right now. Planning to upgrade it to 16gb in the future.

I am starting a new ultimate retro gaming machine build. It has been a long time since I saw a case call out that it supports BABY-AT form factor. There will be black light glowies. I may get another one of these LanParty boards soon because of the processor that it comes with. Right now I have a 4600+ 2M chip, which is somewhat on the rare expensive side now days, but ultimate would be the 4800+. Plan is for CL2 ram, unfortunately seems to be only available in 512MB sticks. Probably will go an SLI pair of 8800 GT's, though the XFX 7950 is perfect for that lanparty color. I specified an Orange case from the seller.

I honestly can't say my hopes are high for that board, DFI's consumer division were rapidly swirling down the shitter by the time that made, so it'll either be a swansong or a complete turd. Here's hoping they managed to make a good one on this occasion instead of the broken stuff they were usually producing at the time. A lot of once good board makers seemed to disappear overnight around then, Chaintech, DFI and ABit mostly, they just kinda fizzled out.

The NAS is now running with the Atom 230 board, seems to work, haven't tested the speeds extensively yet but as it's measuring in the MByte/s rather than the steady 150-300KByte/s that I'd get talking to an NT6 machine, it's gonna be good enough.

After years of using the Nokia 1100 I have had to cave in and order a new phone. Not a fan, can't find one with the features I want and actual buttons, so I'll have to find a way of chaining a stylus to it. It is a boring slab like any other modern 'phone' but if you really want to see it, here; https://www.alcatelmobile.com/alcatel-3v.html
What bugs me is finding a monitor of that resolution and quality for that price point (this is a sub-£80 phone) would be impossible, but then according to NEC you can't make a panel with that pixel density anyway, despite these phones begging to differ.

@brostenen XP Pro even though the 8800gt's are DX10 / Vista. Will be running 2GB of ram mainly because I want the CL2 which is 512MB so no need to run 64bit.

Ultimately I wanted to run TracerX ram and I do have some DDR stuff, but I can't remember at the moment if I have 2 or 4 sticks and if 1 is bad, seems like 1 was bad but that might have been a DDR2 stick. Anyway those DDR Tracer sticks have been non existent on ebay for a very long time, only see the DDR2 stuff which is still not overly common.

Bought 2 8800gt's, Alpha Dog Edition WOO! ha ha. I still would prefer the XFX 7950 because of the neon glowing bits, but the guy that had a bunch yesterday conveniently sold out by today. One Alpha Dog is still in box, so that is the one I chose to share photo of. The other card was just the card itself but was $15.

Some more items for the build -

@dxzeff If the board doesn't work or has some kind of impossible quirk, guy said it worked, but I already have a system with this board in it, paired with the X2-4600 so if nothing else I have a fall back board, which in itself is a top board for the 939 too.

Other side of the coin, picked this up from the guy in Latvia. Says it works and I have bought some 486 boards from the guy before so he has been a good source of interesting rare boards. Anyway this should be fun to mess with.

MSI P54C SI7 SIS chipset.

Testing a new SD2IEC drive and a new Epyx FastLoader Redloaded. Load times are reduced dramatically. One cracktro loaded in 11 seconds with the Fastloader, and 53 seconds without the Fastloader.

That MSI board should be fairly similar to the TMC one I was messing with, also probably the SI55P that the K5 is on here, at least in how it runs. The AMI BIOS is different though, the ones here are all Award, I'd also be curious to know if it crashes in Doom after a fair length of time has elapsed.

There was a time when I considered grabbing an SD2IEC for the C64, but could never think of enough things that I wanted to see running to justify the cost, I think that's when the EverDrive was obtained, instead of the SD2IEC.

Update on the 1M cache; The chips don't appear to be working, though cracking open a spare suggests they're somewhat real despite the dubious silkscreen as there are bond wires and what looks like a CMOS SRAM die, it'd be interesting to know the history behind them. As it is, my nails are too broken to pull them again, so the P66 will be cacheless for a little while. By pure luck I stumbled upon some more which appear to be legit that were literally seconds away from ending, so here's hoping those ones work - those surplus 486 boards are sure handy to test such things, always have a flaky one on hand in case something gets fried by dodgy Chinesium components like this as there's no way I'd throw them directly into the PS5. The 128M of RAM does work though, in fact memory bandwidth also doubled which makes me wanna go and check the SiS 500's datasheet to see if interleaving exists on this chipset. Also rewired the sound and video cards slightly, making it more elegant and less messy, as well as replacing the VGA card with the identical spare to dodge the dry joint issue with the RAM, can't fix that yet due to no hot air gun.

Almost forgot to add, the Atom NAS is still running with no downtime, top speeds seem to be around 6-7MByte/s which is more than enough for what it does, considering 99% of its workload will be talking to systems with 10Mbit/s NICs. It may be possible to get better speeds with a proper cable instead of 'over the mains' plugs, but gigabit will never happen as the onboard NIC only does 10/100 unfortunately and, naturally, the RAID card uses the only PCI slot. Still, not really an issue when the 'client' systems will never top it out anyway.

Otherwise, I replaced the first two cassettes I ever owned, because mine play like shit now;

The 'Power of Love' compilation always amused me, because it doesn't feature that song, or any song with that title. Perhaps they couldn't afford the licensing. Similarly I've always wondered why there has never been a compilation called the 'Power of Ballad' as, really, that's the one genre which is asking for a compilation with such a name.

Also ordered an equally worthless vinyl;

Well... I find it way better than Floppy drives. More compact and so. I did have a drive some time ago, and it took up too much space. Besides, I like casette tapes way better. To me they are more iconic on the old 64. So I have aimed at SD2IEC and Datasette.

Bought this one in the picture....
I have an extra set of 512k Ram to upgrade it with, so why not? :-P
And because complete systems are too expensive and I have two complete ones (one heavy upgraded), and one extra keyboard and some more spareparts, then it will not hurt having this in the closet if things "go south".

@Old Guy 88; I'll try again with K6-3 stuff eventually, it's just low priority as I only want one for testing, the K6-2 is more than adequate for its job and the K7 comes out if more power is needed. Never seen an ECS branded nForce 2 board, the lack of SATA and other features is kinda interesting, Chaintech also omitted some common features from theirs which makes me wonder if these two are more likely to work than most of the others.

@Brostenen; I've never even owned a C64 floppy drive, they weren't popular in the UK and were pretty much impossible to find here - I don't know if this holds true today - as well as being expensive to import, people preferred tapes for whatever reason. But yeah, never had a good enough reason, there are like 2-3 decent games on the whole system that I already had on tape and everything else is just scene wankware with limited novelty value. It is impressive what a C64 can do, no doubt about that, but the fun wore off fast.

Well.... I still think the C64 is fun. It has a wery special place in my heart. The first computer that I tried. The sole reason as to why I am in the vintage/retro hobby. And boy do they make things for the C64. Flash cartridges, SD floppy and tape drives. Tape drive dongles that works by playback of games stored on a smartphone in MP3 format. Multikernal ROM boards. Dual SID chip adaptors. Component output upgrade boards for the VIC-II chip. FPGA and Microcontroller SID clones. Wifi network cards and IDE controllers. FPGA based recreation of an entire C64 mainboard. And the list goes on. New games released each year.

Yup. It is an awesomme machine, and as I mentioned, then it is my first Computer love. Then I had a deep and brief love for Amiga between 1988 and 1994, untill I started dating that old lady again between 2003 and 2006 and finally again from 2016/17 and right up to now. All along a constant love for the X86 platform, starting around 1986/87 and have been in my life to today. I did try Apple stuff a couple of times in 1995 (PowerMac 52xx-AllInOne machine) and once in a while from 2004 up to today. To me they are just computers that can be used, nothing more than that. A bit like modern Win10 machines. They are just tools for stuff like home banking, everyday life and nothing more.

EDIT:
There are only a handfull of things that I deeply dislike, and that is WindowsME, Windows 8.0 and Windows 8.1. There are only one thing that I absolutely hate in the computerworld, and that is Windows10. 30 seconds into working with Win10, and I am back on Linux. What is it with Win10? I have no oversight on were things are and were to click on things. Hell... Even iPhone are better. And that says a lot. Sorry for my ranting. I have deep love for 99.99% of all computer related stuff. Just not Win10. I'd rather switch back to Win2000, than having to deal with Win10 more than I have to.

I had to share this. Guy on facebook retromachines group posted these images of the system board out of his Macintosh SE. Besides the harsh corrosion, not sure this could have all been from the battery but maybe, the capacitors are what caught my eye mostly. I have never seen caps bulge in this fashion before. It is like they are little ACME bombs just about ready to explode.
