Harris 286 Posts: 12 | I used the Windows MIDI Test (Flourish.MID, Onestop.MID, Town.MID, Clouds.MID, Canyon.MID, Passport.MID) for my comparison since it works pretty well. One sound card is the Creative Sound Blaster AWE64 Value CT4520. This card uses the Creative CT8920-NBQ chip as well as the Creative CT1972-UAS (Creative EMU8011-01) which is a later revision of the Creative CT1971-PCQ (Creative EMU8000) chip that was used on the AWE32. The other sound card is a Yamaha YMF724E-V Sound Chip based sound card. Played utilizing the AWE64 Synth for standard MIDI and Yamaha YMF724E-V for XG MIDI using Winamp V2.95 and recorded with the Creative Sound Blaster ExtremeMusic Sound Card. No extra audio effects other than EQ have been added. I have enabled Creative 3D Stereo Environment in the settings under Windows 98 SE in order to expand the spaciousness of sounds in a traditional two-speaker system. I think I may favor the Yamaha YMF724E-V as my sound card in Windows seeing as it has more options as a general use Windows sound card than the Creative AWE64 and plus it sounds better too. My main criticism is that the Yamaha YMF724 sound a little weak in comparison to the Creative AWE64 at times. TM Crusoe Posts: 618 Location: Hull, UK | Comparisons like this are always neat to check out, even if only to see another person's view on the matter. It helps when they are well presented, in a clean cut, no nonsense manner as yours was, so you have earned yourself a like. Overall I'd say both cards have their strengths and weaknesses, I'd side with the YMF724 overall, but the AWE 64 is a useful card to have around and one thing I feel it definitely has in common with the YMF724 is that it seems to have gone widely underutilized in games. I may have to try and record a test with the same MIDIs using my Terratec before the K5 is rebuilt, as I'll probably not use the card in there again and haven't really seen them around on the web. It is interesting, though, how typing "Terratec Maestro 32/96" into YouTube yields a guy using the card with the same module I have, hell of a coincidence.

TM Crusoe Posts: 671 | Personally... I find both cards great. And I think they really fit two different types of setup. Using any AWE64 card. I allways use them in late-era Dos builds. That is machines, based on eighter a Pentium-I or a Pentium-II. For the YMF-724 card. I use them in Pentium-III or AthlonXP builds, as they are PCI cards. 286 to 486 (included), I would never use an AWE64 card. As I need to have a real OPL chip. Most games that are running fluid on 486, are not AWE-Compatible anyway. You know... Duke3D and Doom-II run the best, if you have a Pentium-133 as a minimum. Never the less... Both cards are awesomme for what they do best on their own terms. Edited by Brostenen 2017-05-21 11:37 PM

Slow 8088 Posts: 3 | The YMF-724 sound extremely similar to the DB50XG daughterboard, but the DB50XG have a little more "oomph" with instruments i think. i was lucky enough to find a Xwave card with a YMF724 chip on it (or is it a 744? they are the same basically), the good thing is it's PCI, while the DB50XG daughterboard require a sound card that have Wavetable pinouts, and for some reasons, some Sound Blaster 16 firmwares have a bug with Wavetable daughterboards, so you need to make sure yours work fine. I'm using one that have the problem, but strangely, the problem doesn't happen in DOS, only in Windows (95/98)
