Fujitsu 186 Posts: 10 | Has anyone experienced any slowdown during keyboard input on an MT-32/MT-100 (LA) module? Its pretty annoying during gaming? Maybe it has to do with my keyboard being USB? It doesnt make any sense given that the machine is very fast (relative to the MT-32 era) and Im having this problem in games like DOOM. This is on a Pentium III 500. I havent tried it on my MT-32 old which I guess I could dig out next week and bring to the office... , but this is an MT-100 which is the same thing as an MT-32 New for those unfamiliar. Any suggestions?

Fujitsu 186 Posts: 10 | I feel bad for posting this now. I did find the issue or at least a workaround. It seemed to be related to using a USB keyboard on the machine.... maybe the USB controller was spamming the bus with interrupts or who knows but using a PS2 keyboard seems to have completely solved the issue . Trusty ol' IBM PS2 mechanical keyboard.... I should have been using that one to begin with.

I don't, and it's my board, so yeah... they better not have a problem with it, haha. Anyway, welcome. I'm sorry I didn't get to reply to this sooner, but if you run into the issue again the only thing I can think of is that perhaps you have an IRQ conflict somewhere? Maybe try looking in the BIOS for a few things - notably, if you have an "Assign IRQ for VGA" option, disable it, Windows doesn't really need that. You could also try turning off "Assign IRQ for USB" to free up another, but sometimes Windows 9X doesn't like it if this is turned off. Otherwise, I don't know, I'd ask what sound card you're using but as you've solved the problem it's probably not worth investigating further now if you're happy to keep using the PS/2 keyboard instead. When I owned an MT-32 it used to lag quite often, not the machine, but the module itself and I came to the conclusion that they're under powered. I don't own one now. The SCC-1, on the other hand, would slow the system down if it was pushed hard enough.

Fujitsu 186 Posts: 10 | So far its working. As you said it probably was an IRQ conflict. Maybe even a bug or other issue with this early USB controller and the card (YMF719) communicating on the bus. I havent done any more testing, like trying other USB devices or disabling IRQ assignment . Though simply unplugging the keyboard solved it, I disabled USB and wont need it on this machine. Usually I use my 486 for DOS gaming assuming its old enough to play well on it, but I was given this IBM 300PL Desktop by a coworker when he saw it come through our warehouse, since we are a computer repair company and a lot of old hardware comes through though usually not that old anymore. He knows I appreciate these old machines and saved it from the crusher. I only have DOS on it though the machine is probably intended to run Windows 98 originally and I will install that later. Before that Ill bring in my Aureal sound card and some other things from my K6-3+ 550. I think the P3-500 would be a much more capable machine. The big downside to this IBM 300PL is that it has an NLX USB slot... so finding a card that has that shape so I can use it is a challenge. Part of me wants to take an angle grinder to the back of the case and make a normal AGP card fit, because I have some decent cards laying around and actually would like to run my G400 MAX so I could compare the benchmarks to the K6-3+. Well.... Ive gone off on a tangent now. Anyway for now its solved but if I do end up getting the card in there Ill put up some comparison benchmarks. I have my 486 to set up. I have an intel 66 DX-2 clocked at 80 that is actually too fast for many older games, like running wing commander 2 it is nearly unplayable. I have a DX-33 someone gave me and a DX2-50 and some other chips to play with, when I inevitably break something Ill post since misery loves company. Edited by Loktai 2017-06-10 2:31 AM
