Based on Server 2003 32 bit.

I have one of these built out of the parts hoard.

S775 with a C2Q 9550, I think, anyway, just under 3 ghz with a 1333 bus. Gigabyte board, 4 gig ddr2. HDD's get added to a "pool" similar to "drive spaces" in later windows versions.

It just sits in the corner, headless, doing file serving, and doing daily back-up's of all xp and later machines. It does this brilliantly. Probably why M$ dropped it.

They did a v2 version but it was a crock.

Snagged a Seagate Ironwolf 2tb drive for this today on Amazon. £54 which is about the same price standard 2TB drives are going for, so not bad.

I've enough space on it now to copy all my movies off my Synology NAS.

Over a year later and this old thing is still chugging away!

It's now sporting an E5200 Pentium dual core and only 2 gigs of ram. Just a waste having anything more really.

It's got a motley selection of 10 sata drives in there now. It works great as an .ISO server for my retro machines using Daemon Tools.

Recently rebuilt the WHS machine, the old s775 Gigabyte board was becoming a bit flakey so I retired it. Rebuilt it using an old HP Pavilion with a Sandy Bridge i3 2120 (2C4T) and 4 gb of DDR3.
Got an Intel Pro 1 gig NIC in there too.

Only running 3 drives, 2x2tb and a single 1tb for the OS.

It's just doing the daily back-ups for the home machines and storing the .iso's for the retro games.

Performance is excellent and the crazy thing was that it activated online! I thought M$ turned off the activation servers years ago! Well, I know they did, I was just gearing up for the painful phone call and when I ran through the steps to bring the numbers up, it activated. I really can't explain it?
