Did VIA ever let any Cyrix-based Cyrix III chips out in the wild? Or are the prototypes essentially unobtanium? I'd love to study such a chip if I ever come across one.

My knowledge starts to become extremely patchy around that point, but I don't think they ever put one out of the door, it is also unclear as to whether any of the technology was reused in later revisions of the C3 or not.

In my search for Cyrix MediaGX info I happened to stumble upon the story surrounding the Joshua core. When I see articles from that time I get the impression that a fair amount of samples made it out as there were benchmarks done by tech websites. This combined with the available databook makes me think that as a product it was already very far in development when it was shot down by VIA in favor of the Samuel core from IDT/Centaur.

However a quick search already shows no indication that working samples got in the hands of the public, with only some mechanical samples available. Also the history is quite confusing, as some state that it's Cayenne->Gobi and renamed by Via to Joshua, while others say the Joshua core is Jalapeno based.

Looking into the C3 history it's clear they went with Centaur designs for that so I expect that there isn't much Joshua/Cyrix tech in those, save for perhaps branch prediction and the FPU, 2 areas Cyrix used to focus on and struggle with.
