Rise MP6 Posts: 263 | So when did 60 FPS become the new holy grail for PC gaming? Back in my, real, win 9x days. 30 FPS was the goal. Are modern games faster or something? Is that why they are mostly shite?

TM Crusoe Posts: 671 | I have no idea when it became the "golden standard" to have 60fps. I do not think that this is why games are shit, more that the reason might be that ideas are used over and over. Again and again. Perhaps it is the game devellopers that are so used to a specific type of idea, that they have gotten lazy. Or it is because people are really that stupid, that they want the same over and over. You can find this in the music industry as well. For the last 20 years, everything have sounded the same. Those that sing, are not really singing anymore, as everything is plastered thick with autotune. They have gone the way of making stuff on computers now. And they have even begun to cut out instruments as well. What is it now a days? Two instruments and someone talking, that have been modded with autotune in the most heavy kind of way. And people want it, because this is what they know. Nobody is thinking out of the box anymore..... Sorry for my ranting. The world is full of people that are blind to real art, and live without setting up some criteria for real art. Not in computer games, nor in music. Like. The world just don't want intelligent stuff anymore. I fear that the world will not see any new Mozart anymore. Anyway.... Sorry for ranting. I have not gone full and all out.... Yet. ;-)

Rise MP6 Posts: 263 | No, you carry on! Echo's my thoughts! It's just another bullshit method of keeping folk on treadmills. I looked on some hardware manufacturers sites the other day. For the first time in my life the only drivers available for new hardware, were for one single OS and that is x64 Win 10. I think the growth of interest in retro hardware and retro in general. Is part of a push back against all this shit.

TM Crusoe Posts: 671 | Yup... It is a counter effect of it all. Speaking of music, then that is why I am always on the search for something metal and otherwise underground. The same with movies and series. I think some 90% of all that is on Netflix is really bad. And I won't even go to the cinema. There are absolutely nothing new, that are worth it. Like movies today, seems like they make heavy use of cliche from the last 30 years. However. A few movies that have come out the last couple of years, are kind of great. I saw the one called The Irishman, and I thought that it was well played. It was fresh to see those 3 seasoned and great actors, do a role, that was off from the roles they usually do.

Rise MP6 Posts: 263 | Anyway, back to my original point. Movies are run at about 25 FPS and appear perfectly watchable. So you could understand wanting games to run thereabouts. I don't see why we suddenly have to double it. I reckon it's just another bullshitism, where they induce lag on lower spec hardware. Keep the sheep chasing the dream! TM Crusoe Posts: 618 Location: Hull, UK | I thought the craze was 144Hz now? Of course it's amusing because most people use LCDs now and LCDs can barely top 30 before they turn into a blurfest, plus their resolution is generally shit anyway unless you want to sell your kidneys and even then, the panels are oversized because according to the companies that make them - and I talked to some support guy at NEC about this a few years ago - it isn't possible to make a screen with such a pixel density at that size and definitely not at that price, or with such response time, yet my sub-$100 phone has a 2K screen with better quality than most monitors. They all lie. Personally I'm still overjoyed if I get a consistent result above 15fps. Maybe comes from years of being stuck on outdated and flakey computers, though I think most of us around here know that this was sadly often the reality when you bought a new game and your shit rig could barely play it, you just went with it and took what you could get. Rise MP6 Posts: 263 | See, I'm so behind the times! 144Hz. well you may as just leave vsync off and hope for the best then! I was just playing Unreal, testing out this new monitor, which runs at 60hz. With vsync on it runs pretty much locked at that but with it off it's unplayable. You can't keep your character on a tricky ledge if the bugger is running at twice the speed! Oh to have had that problem back in the day!

UMC U5S Posts: 55 | How about 500hz? https://www.theverge.com/2022/5/24/23139263/asus-500hz-nvidia-g-sync... As for monitors i prefer Nec pa301. Good quality, not produced anymore. Also there are Eizo, but they insanely overpriced. Edited by spacedrone808 2022-06-15 7:41 AM
