Leaving my commentary on things here, coz i don't have youtube profile to leave comments there.
Just finished to watch your channel completely and would like to express universal gratitude to your art.
Proper feeds like yours are so rare. Channel has unique identity, which helps it to stand out from million sub channels with shite ad content.
Channel has it's distinctive character.
It is easily visible how much soul you put into the project.
Like concept of three guys: you, annoying camera man and that Mullet 80s punk.
Like your plain life rants in the second part of videos.
Like secret outro part after synth jingle.
Like your long videos, they are a deep dive for sure.
Some personal questions if you don't mind.
Answer only if you really have spare time to do this.
1] your thoughts on k6-3+
2] your thoughts on Linux
3] in what core2duo issues your run into?
4] do you know any good software to emulate pc speaker on a modern machine in pcm mode?
Some commentary on your latest thoughts and troubles.
1] Don't take into account pathetic government pricks, they are almost the same degree of stupidness in any country. I'm from Russia. And believe we totally have no rights here with this senile statesman, which clearly suffers from debility. Especially considering his "war operations". Please focus on your hobby, you are making really awesome content.
2] Regarding win10 updates, principles of ergonomics and overall convenience. Yeah, it is clearly visible that computer hardware/software are made by people who don't use this shite at all. Why don't you use Windows 7 instead? It can be turned to no telemetry point and is blazing stable comparing to win10/11. Windows 7 totally covers my needs in computing.
3] As for xeon desktop workstation and modern hardware. Take a look at latest Ryzen. FPU wise performance is so good and it costs less then blue cpu.
4] As for modern workstation laptop: i know that you don't like Dell much, but anyway take a look at Dell Precision 7510/7520. Coupled with xeon, ddr4, nvme and 4gb quadro gpu can do magic. I have two of these to be completely future proof, because i know that there will be no good machines in our country anymore. Yeah, the casing is not so good as in Dell M4700/4800, but in terms of performance they are excellent devices.

To answer your questions:
1. K6-3s are usually not well supported by motherboards. Generally I'd just use a Pentium III or K7 instead, solely as they're easier to find, or they were. There's nothing 'wrong' with them, I just never had any real want to use one and the few I've run into have all been dead.
2. Linux. It's free if you don't value your time. I don't think about it very much, because all of the tools I use tend to only work on Windows. My only experiences with Linux have been painfully slow, however.
3. The Celery 2 chips always performed poorly in video rendering for me and for some reason, my hard drives always seemed to suffer data loss with ICH9R boards.
4. Unfortunately I don't. Quite honestly I try to avoid doing anything audio related on modern PCs as they don't seem to lend themselves well to such things versus an older system.
Rest assured, I never allow a government to color my view of a country's people. I'd hate to think people thought ours represented me. Doesn't matter where you are in the world, it seems, they're all just dickheads, the political classes.
I don't use Windows 7 because I have a worse time with it than Windows 10. If I had my way, I'd have stayed on Windows 98SE or Win3.1 - curiously, I like the 3.1 UI more, but also recognize that 98SE's one was far better. I'm just stubborn and spent more time with the former. Guess everyone has one they prefer, some people still swear by the command line even.
People keep suggesting Ryzen to me. Can't do it. Too expensive, not enough expansion options. In all honesty, I'm probably going to end up on a cheap i3 next time with some poor old 90s PC doing composite captures or something.
Laptop is much the same, I'll get some cheap Acer as at this point, it just has to run a browser. This crappy EliteBook has reminded me of how to get things done without owning a laptop that isn't 20+ years old.
In any case, much appreciated. Videos will come back, I'm just waiting on hard drives as I'm totally out of disk space and can't free up enough to work on a proper video until I can move some files to somewhere else. It'll probably be something smaller when a video does happen, like plugging Sega controllers into PCs. Maybe. Not sure yet.

| Regarding Linux totally agree with your point of view. It doesn't cover my multimedia needs. As web surfer it is good, but anything deeper it is definitely not.
Also agree on strange attraction to Win31 gui, used it when was around 12-13 yo.
As for Win9x, for me it was too prone to crashing, that is why i prefer WinNt core.
Nevertheless this fact stayed on Win98se for a pretty long time.
Frankly speaking i don't get about "not enough expansion options".
I use Esi Maya44 ex as audio card, works for me. Asio drivers far better than Asus.
And what about XP?

Location: Hull, UK | About the only time I've found Linux useful is when Windows won't read a hard drive due to account security. There are limits, however, as Linux' RAID support has always been poor, so you're only gonna be able to do this with plain non-RAID drives in most cases. As it happens, I use Tails for this, which is a version of Linux made for Tor. I don't use Tor, but that Linux distro is lighter than most and will still run on pretty crappy hardware, it is also designed specifically not to mess with the machine unless explicitly told to do so.
The appeal of Windows 3.1 is mostly just familiarity for me, purely due to how many hours I've spent with it. Windows 98SE's interface is definitely better in that it makes more sense and can be navigated faster.
Windows NT is unfit for purpose in my book. It worked if you installed it on a server or an office machine where it had to do one job and never be re-configured. It fails miserably as a 'general purpose' operating system, as it's too slow, uses a file system that isn't good for multimedia and doesn't have direct hardware access. Win9x was never crashy for me when set up right and was much easier to reconfigure when it wasn't. NT's network stack is also a buggy mess and performs more slowly than that in 9x, even now, due to problems that are almost three decades old - recently I moved to a smaller switch and ended up on fully gigabit Ethernet, but still don't see an increase in speed because of the crappy network stack, or its SMB implementation at least.
A lot of people did stay on Win98 for as long as they could. I think it was still the most used OS visiting Google by the end of 2004, but then started to fall off as dual core CPUs came in. Prior to that, it was the OS of choice for a lot of gamers, as it actually ran significantly faster, and I seem to think this was to the point where ATI had to backtrack on dropping 9x support on their 9000 series cards. A K7 machine on 98SE will invariably outrun the same machine on 2K or XP. The gap might have closed as XP's drivers matured, though theoretically it'd still always be at least a little slower if only due to the HAL's overhead.
For the record, I've seen NT3/4 crash far more than Win95/98 and it isn't usually trivial to fix. NT3 often can't make it past the installer and requires floppies for some dumb reason. I always believed that WinME was designed to fail purely to make people forget that they didn't want to use NT, with XP being pushed out conveniently quickly afterwards.
The plain Ryzen machines don't usually offer RAID onboard, plus finding motherboards is difficult. They usually also lack PCI-E lanes, which I'd need even more of due to that lack of RAID controller. I'd not have enough. As such, I'd have to buy one of those server grade ones (the name evades me) which cost too much, have even less motherboards available, and I'd get better features and performance per dollar from a Xeon W22xx machine. Sound cards are irrelevant in modern operating systems, so I just use whatever the board comes with. They're all the same and all limited heavily by Windows NT's audio stack - it's almost as though the platform wasn't designed for that or something.
XP was the last OS that was remotely usable, but I never liked it. The only reason I ever ran it was because of multiple CPUs and the fact it was less trouble than Win2K. It was only ever a tool and one I was never a fan of, as it was slow and the UI was a massive step down from what came before. | |

I'm dropping Ryzen 5950x because i finished Blender stuff and would like to try Broadwell platform and save some cash.

Location: Hull, UK | They're not bad CPUs, but a little older than I'd want to upgrade to, given my workload wouldn't use the additional cores and performance wouldn't be much different to the current machine as a result. If it were a few years earlier, say if I'd been on a V1 E3 and not a V3 E3, they'd have been perfect, though.
Personally I might still not bother and just end up running some low-end i3, depending on how things go. It'll be quite a way off yet anyway, especially as funding this year is being directed more towards a motorcycle than at computers. | |
